A discovery ... maybe ..

Post by gunrunner68 »

Ive been looking for awhile and i like the look and the economy of the discoverys . I am thinking maybe a diesel but dont know to much about them .
So what are their good and bad points . Im looking at something around 1995 onwards as they seem good value ..

I have heard the diesel motor are good , the auto boxes have problems with them . The bodies are prone for rust if not looked after .
Not to mention the wiring can be a nightmare . Is any of these true ???

Come on guys i need some input here ...

Mate you get a lot of vehicle and comfort for the money.
The autos are good for 200-250 thou before requiring a rebuild (but that not to say you wont get double that or more)
the Tdis are slow and an OK motor, the V8 are also under powered but keep on going.
The electronics are no worse then any other vehicle with similar features and vintage.
Ignore the oil leak comments and reliability, truth is any vehicle of this age could present these problems.

Abit more info;
If your looking at fitting larger tyres then the differentials are something to consider (not good for anything over 33s).
Average consumption for the v8s is 20L/100, I believe the Tdis average at about 13L/100.
I wouldn't pay anymore then 4000 for a good example 1997 onward v8 or 7000 for a late Tdi. But these would have to be near perfect.
Most would be worth 2000(v8) - 4000(tdi).

Good luck with your hunting.

The diesels are great, V8's are cheaper to work on.....

Check this one out, 1996 everything updated from the 94 and 110Km for a V8 is nothing....

Its not that cheap to be honest. I believe 94 was the change over year from the 200 to the 300 tdi (could be wrong)???
If it s 200tdi its over priced ;)
Also being an earlier model with the older trim, it's going to be worth less (naturally).
Just got to remember these vehicles aren't worth much at all these days, which is both a good thing and a bad thing depending on what side of the fence your on :D .

Yep Grimace is right 94 is the change over year ,
this one is a 200 tdi more reliable motor but less power ,
If i was you i would steer clear of the landy diesel and go for the v8 your repair bills will be a lot cheaper .
I say this as my d1 tdi that we have had for a few years now has been nothing but dramas in the last few months it has cost us about 6k in repairs and then through a rod ,
So out it came in went a 3.9 v8.
Good luck with what ever you i hope this help
