widening track -legalities
Question for all the guru's
-what are the legalities of widening a vehicles track? Most 4b's cant be widened more than 50mm, but then I've read bout people using 'ifs hubs' to gain width for more stability/ mudguard clearance. Is the widening limited to 50mm from factory eg with wider rims/tyres or 50mm on the 'new/modified' axle housing?
The reason is I'm considering using 80 series axles under my 60 to -A. gain more clearance under the guards, -B. gain rear disc brakes & -C. maybe even go coil up front.
Thanks, Al

Stepho wrote:Thanks Nick. Any comments on the 80 axles?
my friend recently swapped 80 series coil axles under his 60 series
he told me apart from being very expensive that it was worth it, almost 4 inches wider in total, and coil springs!
it is approvable, but you will probably need to run flares or similar, but it is an expensive conversion!
in NT i think it would be legal!
IFS spacers are cheaper and easier...
the 80 series diff is only wider, for the same reason, it has the WMS on the hub located further across the bearing assembly, which is where it gets its width
hands and mums dont count!!!
..
how much wider (WMS-WMS) is an 80 diff than a hilux ?? i was thinkink bout runnin 80 series front and custom rear

it would be up too 6 inches in the front
hypo TRUST ME
i told jeremy not to spend the money on his surf, i told tonka to buy bigger tyres than 32s
now listen up, i wanna save you some $$, time and heartache:
you CAN run the 80 series diff, just put it straight in, it will work!! it is closer to centre than the other cruiser diffs, and is also not that much of an issue due to your driveline length, get a standard front shaft, have it lengthened, BOOM it will mate to your 80 rear NO WORRIES....
dont go custom!!! I was young and full of time $$ effort one day, but lately id even weld leaf spring perches on it and roll with it, or convert to coils and use the standard diff

Excellent, thanks BJ! Is your mate on the net? Would like to pick his brains, -cost, any hassles mating things up, tyre/rim sizes, spring height, etcetc....
Christ, almost 2" a side......must be big flares!

he is on here, but not real often, the rear was difficult as he did a custom a-frame, the front was easier, but still needed some work, as he, the rear chassis width differs by over four inches whereas the front chassis width differs by only around 2 inches,
he is running 38.5 x 14.5 super swamper SX tyres, with an international scout body on it, a ford V8, shortened, bobbed, ute tailed, and a ford fuel injected V8 but it essentially, chassis, gearbox, and diffs was stock 60 series!!

Cheers for the info.
i will get some more recent pics of it soon, if you hound me (annoy me a bit) i will get off my ass and do it quicker, i was talking to him last night and he said he will come on and explain it!

i totally agree with bj on this one.
With the driveline length it is fine to run an off centred diff. It will work.
Team Gadget or whatever it was called, the big black 40 series at TTC ran GQ diffs. GQ rear diffs are centred and he runs standard landcruiser transfer so his tailshaft runs at an angle.
..
yeah mick i not worried bout it runnin on an angle i just wont sumthin different

you will then run into other problems. Like if you break a rear axle you cant just run down the wreckers or whatever to get one you have to wait to get another custom one made, more time and $$$.

this is what i was getting at and not only that bend a housing? $$$ and on and on, if the jig and all aint done perfect then you are gunna be up for more $$
just use the whole 80 series diffs under it.... that will be something different!
