Could be the bushing that the gearstick sits, in. Stick also could be a problem. I had the problem with 4th on a box that I changed out, so I had changed the bushing and swapped stick at some point. I pulled down the box recently, but i have yet to find the issue with mine. I will probably have the mechanic come and look at mine., but the forks and the shift rods seem ok so far. Other issues could be worn gearbox mount or engine mounts. i had a problem in the mk i had before, where I couldnt get into low range. I put in new gearbox mounts and it was ok after that. I am currently having the problem on the current box, but where whereas the previous box the gear would not go in at all (even when engine off), this box will go in with a lot of stress. I hadnt change the gearbox mounts before, but definitly doing that this time (along with another box as it turns out that the box had water in it before i got it and the bearings sang, when i just put it in). I have also been advised to change oil, but i am not sure that it would just affect one gear, but give it a go and make sure to put itn a gl4 oil.
89 gq dx. bone stock --- for now.
