Itercoolers Hilux L series
Hey guys
Well I have a 2.8L going into my Ln65 (1985) and have a safari turbo for it.
The pump and injectors have been played with and Im now looking at intercooler.
live up north in Darwin so air to air is out the question. So obviously it's water to air. What setup are you guys using? Input from every1 would be thanked. Especially if you've owned or worked on these sort of engines.

I haven't fitted an intrecooler to my 2.8 (2L-T turbo fitted), but I have been thinking about it and found the link below has the most DIY options.
It's a surf site but applies to a Hilux just as well.

Why do you feel water to air will be more appropriate than air-air?

i have heard from those in tropical countries that intercoolers tend to turn into interheaters rather than coolers. however water-air has the same problems as air-air tho top mount air-air tend to be the worse. however water-air is quite good for those who have trouble fitting air-air. theres a fair few that remove the intercooler and fit water/alcohol injection systems.

I want water to air because it won't do any high way work and it'll be all slow driving and a lot of mud driving. (more then you guys would get) and I don't want the intercooler getting full of mud. If I get front mount air to air it'll have to be in front of the rad so it'll get blocked causing more bad then good. Going top mount air to air is tight and will heat up more cool down.
The rad I would be using for my water to air would be on my a decent siZe so won't get hot to quick.
Our climate is a lot different. And because we do a lot of mud and deep dirty water air to air in my application is not practical

ive got a safari turbo kit with a safari intercooler and it works well

Well then, in your situation i agree that water/air would be more practical. I run a PWR kit (2nd smallest barrell available from memory) on my 2H which seems to be quite effective, dropping peak EGT's by 150-200deg. The radiator is small and the water does heat up with prolonged driving - what affect this has on performance i couldn't really tell you; though peak EGT's are pretty consistant. The small radiator does fit nicely behind my grill and i don't see enough benefit in a larger one to warrant the re-working required.

just be carefull where you place the IC radiator otherwise its like a front mount, gets full of mud. however it still has a good heatsink effect even with a blocked radiator.
a small header tank at a the high point is handy and having the water outlet on the high side of the IC gets the air out a lot better.

I agree with you.Air to air intercoolers dont work as well in the tropics as water to air. I've tried both on my 2.8 and water to air wins hand down.Especially in build up.
I run my radiator behind the cab so it doesnt get glogged with mud.
Chat to the old fella at Prem fuel Injection.He is pretty clued up with them.

My father owns diesel injection in winnelle. The cluey fella your talking about name is gobs"Shaun" personal. Friend of mine. He no longer works there.
The rad will most likely be mounted horizontally with a custom cap. And custom tanks with thermos. Will be in the engine bay tho
