Shell Spirax A
Hi fellows. I recently did a gearbox swap with a new clutch. The gearbox oil, that i put in was Shell Spirax A. i now find gear changes to be notchy (gq patrol). I have recently discovered that the appropriate oil would have been the Spirax G. Would this have made a difference?
89 gq dx. bone stock --- for now.
Re: Shell Spirax A
I'dsay yes. In my GQ that had a tired gearbox i had to run different weight oils from winter to summer to get smooth shifting.Lawrence wrote:Hi fellows. Re: Shell Spirax A
Best thing I did with my GQ was put a mobil tractor gearbox fluid in it. 424 agri or something like that. Shifted smoother than ever after I did especially getting her into first.
What do we want? TIME TRAVEL! When do we want it? THAT'S IRRELEVANT!
Re: Shell Spirax A
Cruiser guys seem to have this problem too, even brand new. The first box I had was much better, except sometimes when cold. At least it would change down the third and second, without a problem. I think I will change it the Castrol, which seems highly recommended on the site.

Re: Shell Spirax A
castrol VMX 80 is the ticket.
i struggled with the 'superior' penrite product and using nulon G-70 additive made little improvement, went to the castrol, havnt gone back, difference was instant

Above freezing the VMX80 is great, but my work car is still difficult to get into gear in a hard frost.love ke70 wrote:castrol VMX 80 is the ticket.

Re: Shell Spirax A
Put Redline MT90 in gearbox and transfer years ago. It is dear but have never had a problem since!
Re: Shell Spirax A
is that the redline made for synchro boxes?
cause alot of them are not and create more dramas than theyre worth...

Re: Shell Spirax A
I didn't know there were different types of the MT90. It has been in there for a couple of years now and it has improved the shifting for sure.
Re: Shell Spirax A
no no, sorry i could have been clearer, i was asking if the MT90 is the redline gear oil made for synchro boxes?

Re: Shell Spirax A
From a quick google & look at a few shell pages, spriax a s2 (not sure what the s2 is though) is api-gl5 & spriax g is api-gl4. Nissan specify api-gl4 for our gearboxes.Lawrence wrote:Would this have made a difference?

Re: Shell Spirax A
Yep - MT90 is the oil for manual transmissions - great stuff i reckon. But it is dear, and that was a few years ago.
