What's it worth??? I am now a disco man...

Post by V.W.Dave »

I am looking at getting a 1996 disco and not being a rover guy not sure.
It's going to be the miss daily and from time to time tow my comp rig around.

Anyway I found this 96 tdi (300???) 5 seat disco. It has a2" lift newish bfg muddys, cargo cage, tow bar but other then that it's stock. It has early sep rego. Has a few minor problems like the speedo about twice aweek won't read. You have to hold it in revers or it jumps out of gear. Other then that it is decked out with power everything and a good after market stereo. Has 300ks on it

It's off a mate of a mates mate he said if I take it this week I can have it for $3200 would you take it???

They are a slug, you wouldnt want to be in a hurry towing anything with it, but if its in good nick they would normally fetch twice that, well with lower k's anyway

I wouldn't pay more than $2500 for it. IMO they're not worth much more than that. Redbook has them sitting at around $3-5k in excellent condition for a 96 TDi. Trade price was $1-3k. That's where you need to be thinking, especially if there are gearbox dramas.

ok so I ended up getting this disco for $2700 but it came with a few extra bits I didn't know about till I went to pick it up.
The free bits are what sold me on the deal.
It came with a 100% complete 2nd engine ( everything from turbo to a/c, alt, top to bottom) that came out of a his old rig that was turned in to a comp truck.
A spare rear diff and axils out of a Defender (thicker stronger)
2 intercoolers
a reconditioned radiator
A full second set of factory aloy rims
still in the box new front and rear brake pads and discs
Steering box
A spare head that came off a engine with a bad bottom end
a spare set of headlights and one of the blinkers
a hand full of different trims from inside the car
A bag he always keeps in the back of the disco that has a new drive belt and one of every coolant hose on the car
A small tool set for the car

ummmm I know there was more but I cant think what else there was.

Over all I think i got a good deal. So far I am very happy with it.

Only problem I have now is I have every spare part but the ones I need.
He took out the sway bars a while ago when he put the 2" lift in it as it was a weekender/camping rig for a while and the trailes he would often take needed a little more wheel travel. Well its going to be more of a daily driver for me and being 2" lifted on bigger tyres she is a little wobbly on the hight way. Any way can some one tell me where it is ment to be on the front and rear and where they attatch to the diff housing it self. Before this disco I had never even looked under a rover before so please be nice,

You'll be able to see on the rear end on the chassis rails about 400mm or so so behind the rear diff where the rear mounts, u may need to drop these mounts with the lift? And attaches to the little round mounts on the back of the axle beside the brake housing, front is pretty much the same thing behind the front axle. Eastiest way to understand it is jump under a stocko in the street somewhere, or just get used to the body roll
