l/c 60 diff into 4runner
I already know this is a stupid question but ill ask anyway.
i have a 93 4runner im doing a SASon. im using the complete l/c60 front diff sprung over, but not sure about the rear end,
i was just going to build the standerd 4runner rear diff up and a add atrail gear 4link kit, but ive been doing a bit of web wheeling and have noticed there are people on other forums that have used a 60series rear diff under the 4runner/surf.
The Question.
is this swap possible??
is the offset pumpkin a problem??
does the tailshaft need to run parralel with the chassis or can it be on an angle??
the reason i ask is that i bought a pair of 60 diffs (f&r) both with mechanical lockers. the diff looks way stronger than the standard 4runner and it seems a shame to waste a good locker.
If the rear locker cant be used does anyone wanna buy it??

id use it ,way stronger and has a locker.
my brotherin law had 60 diffs under his 4runna, didnt have any problems.

No it will never work it is imposable to get the rear diff of a 60 under anything but a 60.
So you may as well sell the diff to me to fit under my Suzuki Sierra.

Hi Lux vented front rotors,
Machine the 60 hub down so it fits inside the disc,
Open up the center hole of the disc so it fits over the hub,
Make a bracket to fit the calipers to the axles housing,
Fit some brake lines and handbrake cable.

get buds customs to make you a custom housing to suit your 60 center but have the pumpkin centered, you can make it what ever width you need!!!

Use a 105 cruiser axle and shorten the long side to the short side length and run two short side axle shafts.

Cheaper to run a Nissan H233 rear diff. Get the same ratio pretty easy 4.11:1 and they are a centered rear diff to start with. Less stuffing around. So run the 60 series up front and the nissan in the rear.
Keep the rear 60 center for a spare front.

For 37" sticky Trep's, you will put the 60 in the rear sooner or later.
4.88 gears with 4.7:1 reduction & put a turbo on the 3L is what I would do.

I run 37" sticky treps with standard rear diff from a wide track hilux (IFS). ARB air locker with 4.3:1 aftermarket gears. Preload the F*#K out of the carrier bearings 150 + lb torque. Never broken an axle. I think the 4.3:1 is the strongest center, but that's me. Still running hilux front diff with longfields and ARB locker.

I have just put the 80series front end in mine and to solve the rear off set problem i have just gone with gq patrol rear which is centred and running 4.88 diff gears in both diffs, powered with a holden 5l and running 37 sticky treps so im hoping for a bullet proof driveline apart fronm the weak 80 front diff.

One problem I fpound other than a small centre on the 4 Runner diff was that it kept pooping axle bearings. Better to go with the 60 series full floater IMO.

If ya got the money to throw at it. Go a hybrid nissan/toyota front diff. Buds Customs can make them up for you. Nissan high pinion center with modified ARB nissan locker with longfield 30 spline axles and CV's. Either hilux or 80 series knuckles. If you want something thats going to last I would go this path. I just got to talk the misses into it.
The housing will cost about $800 to be made from scratch and you should be able to work the rest out. Just think that a new crown wheel and pinion is $400 a pop. So it doesn't take long to add up when they go snnnnnap!

If it's going to be engineered street legal, as I understand it you must have mechanical hand brake to each rear wheel.
This is why a GQ rear axle would be an issue for you, tho there is 1 variant I'm told that does have what you need
Might want to check out ADR and/or DOT requirement first as some rear disc conversion "kits" will require you to use a transfer mounted hand brake.

The main point of this thread was to see options about rear diff.
it seems with rego and sh#t it will just be easier to build the rear diff to handle the power and tyres.
Standard diff plus these goodies-30 spline axles, ARB, subaru caliper/gq rotor disc conversion, and a LIGHT right foot should make it legal and strong enough??? I HOPE

it is really hard to say what diff will or will not be adequate of handling what you throw at it. if set up correctly hilux diffs should handle it. with a 4 cylinder anyway. put a welded 2 pinion rear centre in it behind a 1uz with duals and a heavy right foot and i can have one wrecked in a day, even with cranked carrier bearings etc. for the best strength go for a v6 centre they have a stronger carrier and hemisphere (i think thats the names of the parts) i had a good run with the one i had in my lux. and i gave it heaps for around 6 months
a 60 series front diff will be stronger than hilux and so will the 60 in the rear, just be sure you can hook a handbrake if you want disks.
keep in mind a gq is quite a bit wider than a 60 series diff, dont know exactly how much off the top of my head but its close to 2 inches per side (4 inch total)

I have never done it but i am of the understanding that the sandard rear disc set up on a 80 series rear diff will adapt straight onto a 60 series diff. That will give you discs and hand brake on the rear.

If you use 60 diff in the rear you could source the gearbox/ transfer from 1hz 100 series Cruiser, or the box/ tranfer from Bundera (g52 and r151) if you are worried about the angled rear shaft. You would need to get a fuel tank to fit behind the rear diff also.

Why not use an 80 rear diff? Diff centre is centred more than the 60, plus you get the factory handbrake/disc brake setup already. If your worried about being too wide, run 60/75 hubs to narrow it back to a 60 diff width.
