ls1 boost

Post by big lux »

How much boost will a stock bottom end in a ls1 hold, and be reliable. I have jus got a blower, it come with 6 and 10 psi pullies i want to run the 10 psi. Just wondering if it will all hold together, i was thinking about pulling off the heads fitting cometic gaskets an ARP stud kit and maybe roller rockers. But dont realy wana get into the bottom end of the thing or costs and time will blow out too much when i get carried away.
Engine already has a pro torque cam heavy duty valve springs/ retainers.
Blower is an Eaton twin scew valley mount.

10 should be alright as long as you get it tuned right and keep the fuel up to it. It has 6bolt mains standard which is pretty damn strong.

12 to 14psi max with a really good tune. You won't have a problem with
10 psi (just watch IAT's). Is it an intercooled setup?

6 is safe, 10 is pushing it but if the tuner is good you might be ok, 14 will kill it.

This was 10psi but i drove from QLD (25c) to Melb (10c) and the tune wasnt accurate enough

Now i play with this @ 15psi (built 408)

yea its intercooled via a pwr manifold with water to air cooler set up in the manifold. I dont realy trust any of the tuners up this way. but if i drag it down to brissy then my tune is guna be out when i get bak home to mackay. 44 lib injectors do the trick for fuel? im already running an adjustable furl reg 044 pump and 60ltr foam fuel cell into a 2 ltr surge tank. What you mean by IAT's?

Jezza at HDT is pretty good (Mackay) and can get you sorted. The differences between Nth QLD and Brisbane are minimal. Powertorque in Brisbane is the very best and can tune to suit. IAT = Intake Air Temp which can spike on a PD blower especially when overdriven. Personally id go 6spi in comp truck and tune for torque not peak power. Your fuel system seems ok, Get Jezza to log the injectors as they are on the small side. Tell him VooDoo sent you and you will get looked after,

The bottom end will handle alot. My twin turbo drag ute (L98 6ltr with just forged pistons [stock crank, rods]) has had 15+psi into it for 2 years and runs consistant 9.8x @ 143mph with no issues. The pistons are the weak link on these engines and on the LS1 engines if you are going to really rev it, it is the rod bolts too.

Our other workshop drag ute has a HTV2300 Eaton blower and is a stock LS2 with LS3 heads and a cam (stock crank, pistons, rods). Its had 14.5-15psi pushed into it for 2 years too on E85 and hasnt missed a beat and runs consistant 10.1 @ 135mph. This is obviously pushed to the extreme.

On your setup the amount of boost you will get with the 6 and 10 psi pulley will depend on the overlap of your camshaft, belt slip etc but the 10psi pulley even with the stock cam wouldnt be a problem at all. Its a good idea to pin the harmonic balancer with a 10 psi pulley as it is just an interference fit and can spin.

Its all about the tune and with the twin screw blowers its about intake temperature compensation in the tune. You setup the tune with lots of safety measures so that when these become to high it adds fuel and pulls spark etc.

Ive got customers I have installed turbo kits on running 10psi daily with stock pistons, quite a few with twin screw blowers on 10psi with stock pistons plus my daily drive VE is running 8psi with the turbo kit and factory fuel pump and is still going very well after 7000km with the kit on.

A good tune will result in many years of reliable driving, A BAD tune will result in broken ring lands

What size/generation blower do you have?

I ve been running 10psi with a Intercooled PWR M112 blower for the last 12 months or so and its been fine..

Have just done a 10k trip from tassie to the cape (we got a bit sidetracked ok!) and am now running it round here in Weipa and its still going strong.. As has been said its all bout the tune.

When you want to get really serious the only way to go is the LSX cast iron block. That's what it going into my mates twin turbo'd 52 Mercury. Along with a pair of 6 bolt LSX/LS7 heads with Titanium inlet valves and sodium filled exhaust valves.
He's keeping it little as a 427 cuber so it should be something pretty special.
LSX has become the weapon of choice in the USA, so much so that getting blocks and heads is now getting to be a real problem with demand outstripping supply.

The lift of that cam is massive and will require flycutting the pistons. What is the actual duration though? The figures supplied are only 1/2 the info. Based on that, its not a boost friendly cam.

I've tuned a dozen or more with over 10psi and all is well with them. You don't want it to knock (ping), tune to the fuel you know you can get and the best quality available. The deck of the ls1 becomes an issue and headgaskets can be hard to keep on, Lsx and cast iron blocks have thicker decks required for big boost(big cylinder pressure) The rods and pistons are nothing flash but seem to hang in remarkably well, the stock crank is only good to around 600 HP, this is fairly well documented on many tuner LS forums in the US.

another vote for Jezza! one of the best from what i heard.
i'd put 6psi through it, but you will still be safe with 10psi.

I run the 112 on my LS.. u will need bigger injectors.. esp if u wanna run ten psi... I run bosch green tops on mine.
