80 SERIES- front end noise

Re: 80 SERIES- front end noise
I had this happen twice before... in old GU it started then about 500meters later it completely collapsed stuffing stub axle too!
In my hungy recently i had a similar issue coming back from a west coast trip, all bearings were new so eliminated that...until later that week it came back! Turned out that it was in fact a bearing that was new and had a small metal fiber in it that was making a squealing noise every so often. I must have picked it up from bench when repacking or possibly it came from inside the new bearing.

Re: 80 SERIES- front end noise
I had a similar noise on the front of my 80, sort of like driving over the white line/ripple strips on the highway???
It turned out the be the brass spindle bush in my case, we had done the inner axle seals about 1 month prior and didnt grease them up before putting them back in.
If you havent done any work on the diff recently i would guess that it is a bearing, well that is where i would start looking anyway.
Hope that helps
Cheers

Re: 80 SERIES- front end noise
I agree with this, we recovered my brothers 80 from 500km away because his wife kept driving, the bush completely seized causing the outer end of the CV shaft to twist up and damage the spindle.faded gxl wrote:I had a similar noise on the front of my 80, sort of like driving over the white line/ripple strips on the highway???

Anyway, it apparently is fairly common problem with fulltime LandCruisers so much that the factory revised the brass bushing and fitted a roller bearing with the brass thrust to help eliminate the problem.
I believe the bearing revision can be retrofitted to any Cruiser (the new spindle came with the bearing type and we retrofitted a spare I found at work to the other side) and the swivel hub kit for later vehicle comes with the bearings (Terrain Tamer kits do anyway).
The old Luxy was fun, but with a young family comes great responsibility.
So I swapped it for a 60. Should be able to take the whole mob camping, plus I got an extra gear, 2 less cylinders and A/C.
