G'day guys. My 6G74 DOHC 24v is dead. Its going to cost $3850 for a full rebuild, or $3500 for a second hand motor from Queensland motor recyclers. Considering the engine itself, those prices are not too bad at all.
HOWEVER, the 3.0L V6 6G72 is only $1750 for a second hand motor from QMR (lowish kms and 3 months warranty). That's a bucket load of money being saved.
So my question is, are the engine mounts the same? Will my 4 speed auto bolt up to a 6G72? Is the wiring looms the same? Basically what is involved in putting the 6G72 into a 6G74 original pajero?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The loom is quite different, it will be quite a bit of work. Do able but a big job. One chap on here did the 3.0 to 3.5 swap and the whole vehicle loom was different, he swapped the entire loom and reckoned it was a big job.
You'd be better off putting a Buick V6 into it rather than a 3.0. How dead is your 3.5 - what is wrong?

Got some water in the engine, and the result was destroyed main bearings. That wouldn't of been such an issue but it seems the bearings dieing has also damaged the crank, and in turn has also damaged a conrod.
So basically the bottom end is in need of a full rebuild. My lifters were also effected by the water, Not damaged as such but got very very noisy.
If its going to be a huge job I'd rather just pay the extra money for a 6G74 and bolt it straight in then.

Ah Bugger. For the price you have below i'd be rebuilding yours as then you know what you have. The devil you know is better than the devil you don't know!

grab a low k magna 6g74 from the wreckers for pittance in comparison on price, f@ck... you get a whole TH magna with the motor for 2k nowadays, there is minimal block difference, from memory you'll need to add one hole for the crank angle sensor and maybe a little timing cover adjustment. bolt everything you have to the long motor and you can drop it straight in, the most cost effective way to do it.

i think the price for the reco 3.5 is a decent price however the price on the 2nd hand engines is way over the top. so id be goin the reco 3.5 then you know its done you will have a warranty itl give you years of worry free motoring, the 3.0ltr is nowhere near as good as the 3.5 there not a bad engine but compared to a 3.5 there pretty shit.
