Securing Synthetic Rope to Drum.

G'Day All,

Just wondering what is the best way to secure synthetic rope to a hi mount drum. Do you crimp on a ferrule the same as steel rope, pass the rope through the hole & let the wraps of rope around the drum do the job, or a combination of both? Why I ask is that I have found 50mts of 12mm Amsteel Blue off a bulk roll. I can splice the loop in myself, just need the word on the drum end.

My Tigerz winch came with a lug on the end of the rope, which is screwed to the side of the drum using a countersunk screw.

Run it through the hole in the drum, double the end over and tape it up real good. Always leave a few rolls on the drum.

Just crimp a 70mm lug on and tap a hole in the side of your drum

From what I've observed crimp on eyelets are next to useless with synthetic rope.

That's what I would have thought as the wraps around the drum do most of the securing.

How about though, drill the end out of a lug then run the rope through it doubled-up?
If there was any load to go onto the lug wouldn't the crimp severely weaken the rope at the lug?

Same goes for wire rope. The crimp on eyelet or grub screw is only to stop the cable/rope falling off if you accidentally wind it out too far.

I once had to respool a wire rope onto a winch that was about 40 cm under water - not fun...

Just weave a loop into the end like you do on the hook side and use stick on sand paper on the drum. You can then roll the whole lot out and it will not spin norwill it ever run of.

Do you mean splice the loop around the drum or splice a loop in the line then choke it around the drum?

as Cris said splice a loop and choke it onto the drum, just check which way you choke it, because one way will lock in place and hold tight, the other won't work very well at all! Also once you run a couple runs over the sandpaper do a couple runs with leccy tape around the drum over the rope already spooled on
