TOYOTA V8 SWAP INTO A 80 SERIES

Post by RABBITS »

G,day all, Couple of questions.I am wanting to put a toyota v8 into a 80 series and I want a auto . Does it make a difference if the 4by I buy is a manual, will that make harder to fit the auto later or should I look for a auto straight up.Not sure if i will be useing the auto box that comes with the v8 or will the original toyota autos be up to the task. This is the start of my home work to see which way I should tackel the project. What I was looking at doing is try and buy an 80 with some goodies on it allready and go from there.I live in Ormeau QLD does anyone know of some one not to far away who could do the conversion. Thanks for any help that can be provided.

If you are after more HP, have you considered turbocharging a 1FZ powered truck?

The 80 series 1FZ is particularly strong once you add a Cometic head gasket and a set of head studs, the motor is capable of delivering 400+ hp reliably with a Garrett GT35-40 and 15 or so PSI.

Anyway - just an idea.
850hp 1FZ-FE turbo, 1300hp one on the way.

Yer I have thought about going that way ,but I was thinking I could get the hp + a bit better fuel economy & still be ok for reliable touring.

are u talking the 2uz v8 petrol out of the 100 series. if so u'll need to use the gearbox for the v8. it wont take much modding to the crossmember to bolt the 5 speed auto in and its worth it

G,day I was thinking of using the lexus quad cam V8, I thought the 100 series V8 would be to much trouble .Thrashlux you have given me something els to think about,I gess I will have to price the 2uz and gear box .Is the 2uz alot better than the 1uz or just a bit better.Thrashlux would you have a rough figure on a price to do the complet swap from start to finish on both engines ,& do you no how much the 2uz & box go for.

Cheers Dave

the power figures are different the 1uz has more power but a lower torque figure
the 2uz also has an iron block
i doubt there would be much performance difference between the 2
the 1uz would have to work a little harder due to its lower capacity and less torque
but it would spin out much more nicely and be more of a revy drivers type engine
The 2uz would be a more relaxed drive

not sure how much the 2uz goes for my guess is it would be dearer than a 1uz this extra cost is offset by the fact you would not need a transfer adapter or other mod to connect it to your transfer

if running an auto you will want to run the gearbox that comes with the engine as the gearbox is controlled by the engine computer Or at( least talks with it as in the early 1uz)

you can make your truck an auto the only problem maybe crossmember relocation and driveshaft length
the manual trans crossmember is located further forward

prices will depend on what is required ie you may get away with reusing the original crossmember location and this wont be fully clear till the motor is hanging in the engine bay
also what fans are needed and what intake and exhaust you will run
pm sent regarding the costing

So many nice things you can buy for the 1uz and they make so much reliable power!
In standard form they are good for around 400-500hp at the treads. With a set of rods and pistons well over 1000hp is achievable.
If they can hold together at that power level, it basically means they are a dam strong engine that is right at home in a 4wd.

WOW that looks awsome you would cross the simson desert in no time in that beast.Thats what I am looking for reliablity and I ges a little bit of economy from the motor.I have heard good things from people who have the 1uz in hylux,s & are getting good power with out the high liters used such as a v8 discovery.I no the 80 series is a lot heavier but the petrol six is thirsty and I was hoping that the 1uz would be better as well as getting that sweet sound from the exhaust.

A 1UZ will be a waste of time.

you will drop .5L and a heap of torque over a 1FZ.

In stock trim a 1FZ is significantly stronger than a 1UZ. (I have significant experience with both in NA and FI forms)

If you are only looking at an N/A 1 or 2 UZ you will spend less porting and cams for the existing 1FZ. Kelfords now do a selection of cams for them, and 1FZ heads once ported can flow a shitload more than a set of 1 or 2 UZ heads. (up to 420cfm)

The only type of V8 that would be worth considering if you want to stick with N/A is a larger capacity one - i.e. LS1, LS2 etc

The 1FZ is only flicked for V8 conversions as few people understand how much potential they have and what parts are available.

Boosted 1fzs are great,

You could also go the 5.7 Toyota v8

The 1uz would be a waste of time in a 80 series in stock form
The 2uz would be great and coupled with the 5 speed auto they get more sting and alot better fuel Eco than the 80 1fz

There is a 80 series body going around that's on a v8 100 series chassis ,
I first noticed his spare wheel was a 5 stud 100series sahara rim, then the ifs and so on
That would sting along nicely .
