Chromo or GU diffs for gq
As it says. i have just blown yet another cv in my gq running 35s and standard drive train. Im leaning towards the diff swap idea as it will be a similar sort of price as putting a set of cal chromoly ones in.

I have a GU front diff in my GQ ute and i haven't broken a cv yet. I did wear one out due to a diff leak that i was too lazy too fix but not broken one yet. I run 35" silverstones and twin diff locks. Only really driven the car this year in a few comps but not been too kind on it... I know from years of experience the GU front diff is a whole lot stronger than a GQ cv.

Ok ill divert a little im looking at running 37s in the near future so im looking at what will in the long term give me reliabilty. So if it can work out well could run GU diffs with strengthened cvs or to save time would it be a better option to just run chromoly cvs in the gq front end?

When are the CVs breaking ? & do you have a front & rear diff locks (not an auto locker ) only reason i ask is because most of the time its due to shock loading ,when a diff is open the wheel that spins turns twice as fast so when it regains grip the CV or next weakest link takes all the load .Not saying its the only cause but it does help and makes the truck more capable - I havnt broken one since fitting front & rear air lockers - mate of mine broke a GU cv on 33s being a clown and no lockers ...

first time it went was ina similar situation spinning wheel come down and pop blown cv but this time was crawling both wheels on ground and she let go. i have a mate running the chromo axles and cvs but did pay a premium for them. I have also been looking at the other topic about the heat treated ones that bolsys do and they seem to have a good write up

in time all cvs and axles will wear and fatigue wether they are cromo or standard . put a gu front in and replace the cvs and axles every couple of years with genuine items and you wont have any issues .nissannewby wrote:Ok ill divert a little im looking at running 37s in the near future so im looking at what will in the long term give me reliabilty. i had a twin locked gq on 37 boggers and never broke a cv. i treated them as good as i could by letting off the throttle before a landing but still did it a few times. i put it down to having good condition (near new) CVs and keeping them well greased. but that is just my experience, i know mick from superior engineering broke brand new genuine cvs basically backing off the trailer, so i might have been lucky
turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown

It depends on what you drive and how you drive it.
Christian from team Boab boasted how he had never broke a cv in winch challenges until the first drive with the DGR team in a pretty serious rock creek, by the end if it he had broken his first GU CV,Myself in the GQ and cal Cv's had no breakage's , Christian is a top place winner in QLD winch challenges with a lot of podium wins and a lot of HP behing the wheel.
Putting your rubber under an undercut ledge will test the best of any driveline.
At the end of the day a Cal CV is stronger than a GU cv it just depends if your budget can justify the cost.
I think a A GU diff overall is still a better option than a GQ diff with cal's, but its a fine line !
I broke many Genuine GQ Cv's as well as Cal C'v's maybe 4 cal's in total over 2 years and the same amount in NTN"s, not driving like an idiot just driving what most guys would not try in a patrol .
The biggest strain on the driveline was the Front digs that i think we were the only nissan in Australia to have and maybe still to this day?, and compound the problem we used sticky 40 Trepador beadlocked and near zero psi.

I have a custom rear disconnect for my Nissan and have had for about 3 years, but it's still sitting on the shelf lol but I don't have a Nissan case either :p I haven't pit it in yet cause I font trus tthe front end social wheeling let alone with just front wheel drive.
