Im just about to put new black sunnies on my 03 Hilux. Ive gone for a +7 offset which will bring the tyres 3mm further outside the guards than the standard zero Hilux offset.
I could have gone up to a +20 but this would have bought the tyres out 19mm past the guards. Would look good but ive heard this creates issues with wheel bearings and causes stress on the axels... is this true?
Yeah this is true. The factory offset rims are designed to put most of the load on the inner of the 2 bearings (the bigger one). If you have the rims sticking out further than factory it puts more load on the outer bearing (the smaller one) and it wears out quicker.
But your new rims aren't that much different from standard so I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just check and repack regularly.
And I'm pretty sure -20mm will stick the rim out more and +20mm will stick the rim inside more..
I have always run large offset rims on my trucks, and while it would add some extra stress here and there, is never been a noticable maintenance problem for me.
My lux has been on -12 rims (+30 is stock, so 42mm wider per side) for over 2 years and almost 40,000kms with no issues. Similar with my old 4runner and my FJ40.
