Yes I have done the search and it didn't get me what I was after. I want to know is there any difference between manual boxes across the Patrol range, from 4.2 petrol right through to ZD30.

The gearboxes (FS5R50B) are the same on the TB45, TD42, TD42T, and 3.0L engine patrol's, apart from small variances in gear ratio's. Ie some have 4.262:1 first gear others have 4.556:1

The bellhousings have different starter bolt patterns between motors too.

The 3 litre patrol with the rb30 engine had a smaller gearbox simular to the rd28. The (FS5R50B) gearbox is bolted to the tb48 too. They will bolt up using a tb42 bell housing as well, but the tb42 bell housing has two less bolts holding it on ,than the proper tb48 bell housing

That is just what I'm looking for cheers for that. Now can anyone point me in the direction of the same sort of thing for the GQ series??

I'm looking at which way to go as far as gearing for my comp truck and can choose between both models for parts.

shifters are in a different place on GU boxes.
early GQ boxes have a PTO plate on the passengers side. they deleted this in later ones. (dont know if the plate stopped during GQ or when they went to GU)

GQ TB and TD42 boxes are the same.

Patrol4x4.com has stickies on patrol specs in GQ and GU sections with the ratios. From memory 2nd is a fair bit taller and 3rd a little bit taller in the GU TD42-T box.
I dont know what the ratios are in the ZD30 box.
the ZD30 bellhousing can be redrilled to match a TD42. Its just one of the starter bolts.

when you start making good power 5th is too close to 4th. 5th is weak anyway. Marks makes a taller and stronger 5th. $1300 to $1600 from memory.

As to what ratios you need. it depends how your engine delivers the power. I was looking at new ratios because there was a big hole between 2nd and 3rd. when I put the built pump on the power spread was so wide I'm wanting the gears further apart. 4th is too close to 5th and 3rd has a massive range and pulls hard from 60kph to over 110.

Albins does a complete replacement gearset, over $9000. I enquired about just getting an input shaft, they told me that it wont fit a normal box. so if you start breaking input shafts you need to start saving your pennies.

Unlimited Engineering do a short shifter for both GQ and GU shifter styles.

IMO just get whatever box is commonly available with the shifter in the right spot and work on getting a broader power band out of your engine rather than wasting time fiddling with gearboxes. IF you blow 5th then put the taller one in, when the 5th gear spline strips you can still drive it. Buy two Unlimited shofters and send one to me so I can look after it for you.
