noisy whinch. how can i shut it up?
I bought a cheap Chinese ATV 3000 lb winch for a side project, its perfect for the job, but fark me its noisy! It makes more noise than my 10000 lb winch on my cruiser. Sounds like its got a handful of blue metal in the gearbox.
What can I do to make it quieter? The current noise level will be a problem
I was thinking of stripping it down and packing the planetry gears with moly bond grease, any other suggestions?

That will help.
Check the motor, does it run on bearings or bushes? If bearings, can they be replaced (from a bearing shop) with sealed units? If bushes, are they dry? Some dry lube or a bit of silicon spray may help.
Given the agricultural nature of straight cut winch gears, they will always create some noise.

I put a Repco 12000lb winch on my 80 about 7 years ago now and if it was on a work site u would have to wear ear plugs near the bastard! its always been noisy.. I have had it apart heaps of times.. packed the bejesus out of the bugger and its still noisy... but it pulls like a bus load of school boys... so I cant live with it.

just a quick Q about your winch.
I was thinking about using one on my boat trailer to drag my tinny (200kg total) up (and down) from steep river banks. Do you think they have enough grunt and will last long enough for it to be a decent idea.

I would say it would easily be up to it Pongo. The one I have is rated at 3000lb
At less than $100 buy it now on eBay including delivery, its worth a try.

I also had one of these Repco winches and it was also noisy. Real grease helped a bit.
What i noticed that it was quieter when on the ground and MUCH noisier when bolted bown tight, loosed the gearbox side bolts and it got quieter.
Could it be that the mounting feet aren't quite the same level side to side and this causes misalignment / noise.
Never bothered to do anything about it - so just speculation.

( usual disclaimers )
It seemed like a much better idea when I started it than it does now.

Re: noisy whinch. how can i shut it up?
food for thought.
I am thinking of mounting it on a rubber pad, and loosely pinned in place to prevent noise transmission. Also thinking of covering it in an insulated box. It will never run long enough at any one time to get hot.
see what happens I guess.
