My shorty forty is injected 350 Chevy, Toyota box and twin transfers and springover. I want to get coilovers for more travel but I know I might have to change my tyres also. I run 44 inch boggers in the mud here but on the rocks we have found out the back of my place I don't think boggers will be the go.
Would really be interested in everyone else's ideas, suggestions on this one.

XZL is discontinued but there are still some around.
XL have really, really stiff sidewalls, they are used in dual wheel setups, the sidewalls have to be grooved to really work well for what we do.
XML are awesome road tyres and flex and bite really well in the rocks, but for a lot of terrain they need the centre lugs grooved up a bit, the pic shows how big the lugs are.. sizes for 16" rims are approx 36" and 39"
They are expensive unless uyou can nab them at the military auctions.

I dont know about the XZL being discontinued, the places i have asked for them at can only get XZL's. I have been trying to get XML's but Michelin doesnt import these to OZ, i have been told this by a few dealers.

I have owned 39.5" TSL's but I see a trend to shorter tyres. I am only asking because the boogers atre fantastic in the mud but they ar not real good on steep side angles. Also the lift the centre of gravity too much. This never used to be a problem dragging in the sloppo out my way.
Has anyoen got the procomps or bajaclaws? I don't think I want to go the Michellins because their mass would be more than my Cv's would like with the CHev on the inside but i reckon they must have there place though.

Keep 'em as short as you can. But in the end, everyone will have a different preferance. The good thing is there are some really great choices to be had locally these days. No longer is it just BFG muddies or their copies or Swampers. There are heaps of choices now with great new tyres like Baja Claws, ProComps, MT/R's and even the BFG Krawlers and others.
And still the old trusty troody Swampers can be had in 15" widths on 16.5" rims. If your diff's can stay out of the way, I reckon the new crop of Claws, MT/R's, Krawlers, ProComps and the like are really worth considering. But then again bloke, it will be a long way down from where you are up there on those 44" boggers!

The XMl's are 325/85's 16in rims. Generally you wont find many good tyres coming off these wagons as they destroy them left right and centre. I have heard of them doing 128 tyres in one day (staked side walls with 3in rips which I have seen repaired with spagetti/safety seal). They get fug all k's out of them and they will have worn in irregular patterns.
They are thinking of getting Kevlar walled tyres to over come the Sidewall problems but they are around 4000Aud each.
There is another vehicle in the fleet that uses the XML which is the new recovery Mog but it is on a 20in rim. don't know what size but at a guess 40-44in.
I have been told that there is a place in Darwin (which is where the ASLAV's home is) that sells second hand XML's to the public through some sort of arrangement with the maintainence contractor British Aerospace which might be worth following up. This last may be bullshit as I was told this by unconfirmed sources but I could try and find out if any are interested.

As for tyres - Best around IMHO TSL's....SX's a are tough, but heavy & wear too fast....I love the way TSL's work on both rock & mud....
MT/R's if only rock....
XML's ...fancy, tough etc....but too much of a PITA to source & replace if you need to...
