Engine swaps
Hi guys, Toyota man here
I am doing some research and need to find out what are common engine swaps for Landy's.
Need to know what you guys upgrade with and which ones are most effective.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Engine swaps
The P76 used to be a popular swap as its a bolt in job with a few mods, now its fitting a later 4/4.6ltr from a P38 rangie.
Some like their diesels so the isuzu 3.9 4BD1 is also popular or a 300TDI from a disco/defender.
Big power means ford or gm engines or supercharging a rover V8.

Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.

What sort of Landrover??
Series 1, Series 2, Series 3, County, 110, Defender, Range Rover Classic, Ranger Rover P38, Range Rover L322, Range Rover Evoque, Discovery 1, Discovery 2, Discovery 3, Discovery 4, Range Rover Sport, Freelander 1, Freelander 2, Series 2 Forward Control, Forward Control 101.
Short wheel base/long wheel base, 2 door, 3 door, 5 door, cab chassis, ute 3.5 V8, 3.9V8, 4.0 V8, 4.6 V8, 4.4V8, 4.2 V8, 1600 petrol, 2000 petrol, 2.25 petrol, 2.6 petrol, 2 litre diesel, 2.25 litre diesel, 200TDI, 300TDI, TD5, Puma, TDV6 2.7, TDV6 3.0, TDV8 3.6, TDV8 4.4, 3.9 Isuzu Diesel, TD4, L Series Diesel
Toyota is a brand name with a whole range of models under it - as you can see so does the the brand Landrover.
What Def 90 is asking what model are you referring to - pick one from the above and maybe an engine and we might be able to give a bit more information.

Re: Engine swaps
OK Def series, Discovery 1, early Range Rovers. I would imagine they are some of the more popular units.

Re: Engine swaps
The RR Classics/Discovery 1 (basically the same car) will have the 3.5/3.9 V8s - as mentioned the most common engine mods is to go up to the 4.6 - expensive mods can take the Rover to 5.2 litres. The other most common mod would be a let Chev LS1?? crate engine. Some of these mods will mean you will have to look at gearboxes and diffs - tfr cases are OK.
The D1 diesel wise has the 200 and 300TDIs - mainly tweaking these engines is the go but performance is average - about Toyota speed. These are generally not changed except to Petrol V8s but some have but in 3.9 Izusu Diesels but onroad performance is ordinary but torque is good if needed. Gearboxes will need to be changed. Chevs have gone in but they are really past their use by date - huge capacity but low power and OK Torque - my RR TDV6 Diesel is half the size and has far more power and more torque. I would look at a D2 - the TD5 in it can be chipped for up to 50% more power.
Defenders - all 200/300 TDIs, TD5s - same diesel comments as above. The earlier 110/County had the 3.5V8 or the 3.9 Izusu. With the Izusu it can be turboed but is not as good as the Izusu turbo version. The Chev LS1 has been put in the Defender.
Gearboxes will not take big power increases, nor will the axles and the Rover brand diffs - Salisbury diffs are virtually bullet proof.

Re: Engine swaps
Thanks heaps for the info
Re: Engine swaps
first of you need to choose what power you want, somewhere between 100hp and 600hp. and whether you want petrol or diesel. then you can get some more specific answers
Re: Engine swaps
and also what your going to be using the car for. Touring or a bit more serious off road or comps and if so what style of comp ?
Thanks to, All the sponsors who support ROCKIT 4X4 CHALLENGE.
Re: Engine swaps
Go and have a look on AULRO. Also look up tombie and what he can do for a td5 , intercooler, ecu flash, egr block etc and they can get close to 200kw from a 2.5 diesel.
As has been mentioned axles are not as strong so look to ashcroft, hytuff, great basin or lucky8 to improve for big tyres/lockers.

Re: Engine swaps
theres a thread somewhere in the uk where someone has fitted a td42 along with nissan diffs/gearbox/transfer. i think it was a bit tight but i know some people are using the nissan 5spd on the rover transfer/engine so you could use one of those adaptors to run a td42 if you want a big deisel
Re: Engine swaps
i'd fit a 4BD1 turbo before a dirty pootrol donk, and have the extra funds to work it and play with other bits
