ok guys, i understand you can put a 5L into a ln106, what i need some clarification on is its my sons first car (qld) he cant drive as a P plater a "modified" vehicle, so the rolling chassis i have is 02/90 model the VIN identifies it came out of factory with 3L motor...
1. is there a way of telling on the engine number its a 5L not a 3L
2. who says it needs a modification, the roadworthy chk or the dept of trans when its registered
i have come across a 3L but the injector is leaking?? is that huge $$$$ they want $2800 i can get a low milage import 5L for $3200
any help and advice appreciated

Re: 5L into ln106
Hey mate,
Im pretty certain on the intake side of the block, There is a stamp that says 5L or 3L, but there usually covered in shit and youcant see it anyways.. I had a 5L in my 1n106 at one stage and you couldnt tell for looking.. Im pretty sure they are pretty much the same bottom end and slightly differnt upstairs. They bolt straight in and look exactly the same.. I built my ute from scratch and had it roadied n registered no dramas. As i said they look factory fit so you wont have any prblems. Just make sure its not the 5L-e model as they have electronic injection setup and they do look way diffent. Pretty certain you can run the 3L intake pipe and everything to make it look like a 3L too, so they would never know anyways...
Hope that helps ya mate!
