GQ petrol to diesel conversion (wiring help!!)

hi guys,

am in the process of converting my GQ 4.2 petty do a 4.2 diesel, understand bacicly everything mechanical,
but when it comes to the wiring loom i wouldnt have a clue. iv had a look at alot of threads and cant find simple questions or answers.

if some one could help with the following it would be much apreciated:

- do you need to change the entire loom (alot of threads say to just unplug the diesel loom and plug it straight in to the other car)
- if possible i would rather not pull me hole dash apart to change loom, is this possible
- can you use the petrol loom, if so what needs to be added and is it worth it.
- could you cut the loom after it comes throught the fire wall and conect it in to the petrol one (difficult?)

any advice would be great

ps the diesel was an st with power windows and all that, the petty is a ti with all the same.

I have done 2 swaps now. both times I have swapped the entire wiring looms.
Its really not that hard a job to pull the dash and swap the harness.

I would get the diesel loom and save yourself some trouble. There is the potential to spend a lot of time splicing in wiring, finding correct plugs and connectors for various things. Have you priced a diesel loom from a wrecker? I would be interested to hear how much

In answer to your questions;
- you don't have to get the diesel loom, it just saves time that could be better spent doing more useful things
- no you have to pull the dash out either way i think. the instrument cluster is a bit different too - i swapped mine but it wouldn't surprise me if people have used a petrol one and changed some stuff.
- add the glow plug relay stuff (all the things found behind the plastic panel to the right of the accelerator pedal) plus wiring so the glow plug stuff comes on when you turn the ignition key to "on" or you need to figure out how to add this function another way maybe using switches. Plus the fuel filter water warning light to the instrument cluster if you want it (amongst many other differences i can't remember sorry)
- not sure but all the mucking around with wiring diagrams and solder could be substituted for adding the factory wiring loom without the mystery.

Getting a diesel loom is way easier. all the work is done for you. If you aren't inclined towards doing wiring (like you mention) then it is a simple decision

2 cents; in my experience non factory items (ie. modified wiring and accessories) is often where the problems occur. Finding intermittent electrical problems in a modified wiring loom sound like a crap way to spend time.
