hj61 auto into hj47

Post by Jon47 »

Hi everyone , this is my first post so I hope I don't f$&@ it up. I'm planning on buying a hj61 to use as a donor for some upgrades for the family hj47 ute. We've owned the 47 from new('84) and it's been a legend ute but it's pretty much stock 2h, 4 speed, no p/s, no a/c so I'm planning on changing all these. I've been reading all the 47 post but one question I have
does anyone know if it's too big of a drama to fit an auto if it is I'll just go with a 5speed. I just recond a 12ht/auto would be awesome in the old girl. I understand about the tailshafts , handbrake issues but are there other more pressing obstacles. I know of a 61 auto for sale with rebuilt motor and box I think it has manual transfer shifter aswell so if I can be confident it will fit I'll go and make an offer. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance Jon.

The removable crossmember under the gearbox might have to be moved? Not sure. If you can pull it off, the auto behind the 12ht would be ace.

Im thinkg of doing something similar. Ive got a mint fj45 fromthe rural fire brigade which looks like it just drove off the showroom floor. I lke the idea of putting an auto into it and then later on a 12ht. I do have a few reservations though. The main one is that the auto seems to take away some of the power of the motor. When i read about people who have swapped out an auto to a manual they say its a huge improvement. However I like the idea of an auto 45 and Im not the sort that has to win every race. Im happy chugging along.
I also have a hj47 and I have put a h55f into it which transformed it into and much more comfortable car on the highway at least. It really was just a straight bolt in. One thing that i didnt like was that i was expecting the rpms to drop to 2100 at 100kph just like in my hj61 but that didnt happen it sits on 2400. Ive since learned that the stock h55f that comes off a 12ht is geared higher as the 12hts peak torque spot is about 2000 rpm.
So if you are going to the trouble of putting in a manual box get a box from a 12ht but then this will give you the problem of the vac actuated transfer case. This transfer wont fit into a 40 series chassis. You need to swap it out to a manual transfer case but this of course is a lot more messing about and expense. Also im not 100%sure that the higher gearing in the 12ht box isnt in the transfer itself so Ill have to open one up and start counting teeth.
I Guess what im saying is the auto box sounds like a good idea to me.

The gearbox crossmember will have to be moved going from auto to manual or vise versa (can't recall which way though).

BB I'm interested to know what makes you think that the 12ht/h55f combo has a higher top gear apart from the different revs you quote... I know the autos DO have a taller top gear than the h55f which is what keeps the revs down in a locked up auto. As far as I know factory high range in all split case transfers is the same 1:1.

Thanks for the info guys ,

Sounds like it's possible to fit ,moving a moveable c/member isn't too bigger drama I hope (going to get it all engineer cert anyhow) I'm on holidays ATM so I'll have to wait a couple of weeks before I can check out the hj61 I'm interested in. Hopefully the 61 is roadworthy cause I need a wagon for about 6 months before I think about pulling it apart.
Thanks Jon

Red, Im no expert in landcruiser drive train so Im not 100% sure all I know is that there is an unexplained difference in revs between my two vehicles and they both have 5 speeds. I know that everyone says that all h55f boxes are geared the same but i dont buy it. I read of one other guy that says the 12ht h55f is slightly higher but I wont kow for sure until i strip it down and thats a fair way off. However I am willing to concede that my diff ratios could not be stock as ithas front and rear lockers. They could have been swaped out for3.7s . All I know is that my 12ht revs lower than my 2h at the same speed and im not sure why. There are lots of variables so im going to slowly eliminate each one then Ill letyouknow.

BB Who else says they have different ratios, I would be interested to know which thread so I can see their reasons..... The diff ratio change I see as the most likely possibility.... it's quite easy to check it if you want to, a jack and a bit of chalk.. there are a couple of examples on the forum on how to do it CORRECTLY....... and if you have 3.7s, bags I to have first opportunity to buy them off you...

diff ratio wouldnt make a difference to speedo cable speed as cable is on the gearbox. you would be doing a different speed to what speedo says on dash
