Hey guys!
I'm not too happy with the turbo I have on my TD42 at the moment.
It's a Garrett water cooled turbo, T3 flange.
Basically it's off boost most of the time, full boost (set at 9psi) is around 2600rpm.
There is not much boost at all under 2000rpm.
Running stock TD42 (N/A) fuel pump, wound up a bit, max EGT around 550c.
I also have 3" dump and exhaust.
I want to find a cheap alternative for a turbo which spools up sooner, I never really drive above 2200rpm.
It would be nice to get boost from 1500rpm (or lower) up to 2300rpm maybe.
Obviously I'm limited to T3 flange, so GT28 or similar are out of the question.
Would something like this work ok:
Compressor .50 A/R (Or should I go for .60 A/R)
Turbine .63 A/R
.57 trim (Or possibly .63 trim)
Turbine exducer 63mm, inducer 73mm
Compressor exducer 52mm, inducer 60mm
Your help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Re: Advice on turbo specs for TD42
Sounds like your turbine and housing are too large, diesels don't produce as much heat and exhaust as a petrol so the turbine and housing don't need to be as large, i.e. a smaller turbine housing will speed up the gas flow and drive the turbine faster at lower revs.
I dont know much about Garret turbos and the availability of interchangable housings, but I'm sure someone here will.
I prefer the Mitsubishi TD05 H turbos, so many options for up grades and hybrides.

Hey Mate
i would recomend a custom built TDO5 aswell i've just put one on mine. i haven't been able to push it at all yet as it's a new motor and i was only going for a test run but i could feel it kick in before 2000rpm with very little accelerator. A few people on this forum build them

Re: Advice on turbo specs for TD42
I'm not chasing massive KW, not even high boost, after I fitted my intercooler I'll probably only run 12psi max.
I don't think my requirements will warrant a "custom built" $1000+ turbo to be honest.
I'm really only chasing some info on what sizing I could look at, to get near where I want to be, but that might not be possible without a custom turbo.....
Main reason I have posted up some specs was so someone in the know can say "that's too big/small, will work/not work" or if the A/Rs are ok or not.
Thanks for your replies guys

Re: Advice on turbo specs for TD42
hey mate
I know what you mean 12 psi is plenty to get the old oil burner going. The one that i got is a modified MTQ turbo from United Fuel Injection ( http://www.unitedfuel.com.au" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; perth ), it was a good price and it's not meant to be a high prefromance turbo by any means but they say their good for about 18 psi. There is a good wirte up by them on here i think.

Re: Advice on turbo specs for TD42
Your turbine wheel is definetly too big for what you are trying to achive.
I have built my own hybride turbo, got it balanced and did some machining to make it flow better.
I just rebuilt a TD05 16g today, its going on a Landcrusier running 10psi.
Where exactly do you live in Sydney, as I have just moved back here near Holsworthy. I know where to sorce a TD05H 16g that would be ideal for your aplication. Just need to know your budget? PM if interested.

Re: Advice on turbo specs for TD42
Haha, I'm only at Condell Park, 10min away!
I have just bought an intercooler, piping and thermo fan and some LED light bars so my budget is limited to maybe around the $500 mark.
Feel free to pm me if you have some info.
As I said, not chasing figures at all, can only get better than it currently is, that's all I want
