105 cruiser front end issue
Hi all
i have had a good look on forum and just cant seem to find anything so this will be my first major post
allrighty here goes.
I recently bought a HZJ105R and only just discovered it dont have drive to front wheels.
so far i have jacked poth front wheels up put car in 4wd and in 1st gear.
in doin this i found that the prop shaft stays still while both front wheels spin freely with HUBS LOCKED IN.
next i pulled the outer most part of the free wheeling hubs to find the springs in the hub not doing their job, however both sides where stuck in the locked position
so the locking gear had slid over the outer part of the cv so it was locked in.
on playing around a little more i found the cv ( well the tiny amount of it you can see from the hub ) had play in it and could be rotated freely
with the transfer case still engaged and in 1st gear.
called previouse owner and was informed it recently had front wheel bearings done.
hope someone can help me with this

Re: 105 cruiser front end issue
ok, while it is jacked up and t case in 4wd, get someone to hold one stub and try and turn the other... if u spin one forwards then the other should spin backwards.
If u spin one and the other does nothing then u best dig deeper mate, could be a busted cv or sungears (unlikely), axel (unlikely) or cv stub (is a bit common) . id say its not the cw&p as the sun gears would still be doing there job and one would spin forwards ond one backwards

Re: 105 cruiser front end issue
Has it had a constant 4wd conversion. is there a button on the dash for centre diff lock.
you said the prop shaft stays still, if this is so the transfer case is not engaged. this would make sense if the constant conversion was done.
If there is a button on the dash push it and see if the transfer engages.
just a thought.

i would hove thought if the prop shaft moved while i was in 4x4 and in 1st gear while stationary i would have an issue there.Paul Smith wrote:Has it had a constant 4wd conversion. is there a button on the dash for centre diff lock.

i have driven the car with my dad looking under car with both 4x4 engaged and not when i was in 4x4 and driving the prop shaft rotated and when in 2wd and moving it stayed still
mind you there is a button in my cruiser under my hazard light button that isnt in other 105's that ive seen
Re: 105 cruiser front end issue
Does the button look like this? IF so I'm guessing its a constant 4wd with part time kit installed. JUst push that button and it will engage the transfer.

IF it (shaft) moved with hubs locked in driving forward then there is no problem with your diff cvs hubs etc. It comes back to transfer then And if you have a center diff lock button that will engage transfer. If no button your prob looking at a transfer case problem
Re: 105 cruiser front end issue
with that picture i have the button switch there but with no cover so no pretty picture. its the base model so with the gearbox i have H2 H4 N L4 so something else to look at there have togled that on and off and no change to opperation.
i think this is a wee bit beyond me with my limited tools and such so thinking take it to a mechanic to get it looked at

You shouldn't need tools tto narrow it down atleaststripey wrote:with that picture i have the button switch there but with no cover so no pretty picture. its the base model so with the gearbox i have H2 H4 N L4 so something else to look at there have togled that on and off and no change to opperation.

First test.
LEave hubs unlocked put car in gear with it in h4 or l4. crawl under car and see if you can turn front shaft with hand. It shouldn't turn if in h4 or l4
This will eliminate the transfer case as a possible problem then your next test is on the front diff.
Second test if first test passed.
Jack up one front wheel with car in h4 or l4 and hubs locked this time.
YOu shouldn't be able to turn the wheel that is off the ground. If It spins freely then you have narrowed your problem down to the front diff, cvs, hubs etc.
Do this then let us know results.
Re: 105 cruiser front end issue
If the front wheel bearings have just been done maybe the hubs are not correct even though they look ok.
if ya gona rev it, Chev it
Re: 105 cruiser front end issue
ok well it seems like front diff dont exist.
this is what i did
i lifted both front left and right side at same time. pulled both freewheeling hubs off and seperated both gear sleeves from the hubs. inserted both gear sleeves into the hub asembally itself ( did this step so i knew for sure the wheels are coupled to the shaft ). both left and right wheels spin independantly of each other. set both wheels spinning by themselves and climbed under and could freely move front prop shaft no isses at all didnt effect the wheels spinning.
so it seems like there is no diff at all
while out there i engaged the 4x4 and in gear and tailshaft wouldnt move so that has been eliminated as has the hubs
