Hilux brake upgrade

Post by kane86 »

Ok here goes I am in the process of upgrading the front brakes on my ln65 I have already put the ln106 vented rotors on and calipers from a 94 surf my question is can i get away with using the hilux booster with a 80 series master cylinder until I can track down a 80 series down so I can at least get the car on the road and use also what 80 series master do I need to use

I think that if you use the rotors from the Surf, youll need to use some sort of hub spacer, its something I was told when I was upgrading my front brakes.

I used vented rotors from a LN106 Lux, not 100% sure on the model they came off, possibly SR5.
I used the calipers from the same LN106.
The calipers I took off my Lux had 1x 25mm piston, and 1x 35mm piston.
The calipers I fitted to my Lux as part of the upgrade, have 2x 45mm pistons.

All bolted straight on, only had to cut a small section out of the brake backing plate so the larger calipers would fit. Nothing else needed to be done.

With the booster/master cyl. It depends on what your will be doing with the rear.

If you are doing disc rear conversion, then get the booster/master cyl from an 80 that had disc brake rear.
If you are keeping the drum rear brakes, then get the booster/master cyl from an 80 that had drum rear.

The early 80series had drum rear.

I would fit both booster and master cyl from the 80series, no chopping and changing is done then. You will need to egg the hole in the firewall to make the booster fit up flush with the firewall, you see what I mean when you go to fit it, shouldnt need much, just have to egg the top of the hole a bit.

I hope this helps you mate.

All good cause surf rotors (IFS) have different back spacing so won't work.
The 106's you used are fine.
Be aware tho that the Surf caliper is made for a 25mm rotor and yours is a 20mm rotor.
80 series master will work with stock booster but not well, a Surf dual diaghpram booster would be better till you find an 80 one.

92 was the changeover in the brakes on 80's from memory :?
91' Hilux Surf with the usual mods & a few different ones ....
