Hey guys some of you may have read what happened to me a few days ago

Just wondering if anything like that has happened to any of you? Also wondering how bad it is for the transfer to drive it with the center diff locked and only drive in rear wheel drive? I wont have to money to get a new shaft till late next week but I need to get to and from work.

i drove my defender around for 5 weeks with no front drive shaft cdl on and apart from take off feeling weird it went ok

I ended up finding a drive shaft on Saturday that came with a complete 93 V8 Auto disco for $400 so all is good

I did a front axel once- just drove around in 4x4 for about a week, but can't comment from a mechanical point of view if there are any lasting issues. But can't see any major reason what the issue would be...other than if you had a crash and the police investigated it.

Welllllllllllll since this all happened last week and I got the new front shaft in the disco has been acting very weird. The faster I go the more out of control it gets. I just didn't seem to want to stay going in a strait line at highway speed. Over 100 it almost wants to dart back and forth to the point that yesterday I was about to over take a truck and had to back out of it.
To add to that this has happened 2 times now, At first take off from a turn key start up it simply will no go. It almost like the park brake is on realllllly hard. I let off the accelerator and back on it and off I go with no problem. There are no noises or vibrations at all.
I started checking all the simple things.
Checked all tire pressures for the walking all over the road.
Using a tape measure i made sure the toe wasn't out. It is toed in by 4mm (nothing to bad)
Visually checked all 4 brakes to make sure they were all making contact and retracting.
I removed the front and rear drive shafts and inspected the Uni's and made sure there was no excessive movement.
I removed the rear diff to inspect and make sure the drive shafts are all ok.
Rear diff is within backlash tolerances and has a good centered wear on the R/P. (it is a Defender center)
The rear diff oil was dirty and it did have some water in it (it was that brown off smelling oil) But no metal or foreign objects.
I removed the front diff, It also has a good centered wear on the R/P and is within backlash tolerances.
The front diff oil was clean and smelt good with no metal or foreign objects.
Both front axils and CVs looked in good condition, no twisting or looseness in the CVs.
Without removing it I felt the tranfercase for any extra movement by putting the transmission in Neutral and spinning the 2 output flanges by hand. There was no notchyness or free play from what I could feel.
I still think my problem is in the transfer case. but I have run out of time to look into it any further.
Is there anything I am missing before I go further?
As I am still very new to Rovers how does the transfer come off? can it be taken off with leaving the transmission in place?
How hard are they to tear down? How readily can I get parts/bearing kits?
Are there gearing options if I need to replace the gears?
Is the tranfer on the 94 V8 Auto the same as my 95 300TDi 5 speed?

Replace your panhard bushes and do the bolt up tight, thats probably the cause of the wandering. If not then the swivel preload, my moneys on the bushes though

definately rear trailing arm bushes and check the transfer case mounts to get a breaker bar see if there is movement could have pushed everything backwards therefore threading your rear bushes
lt230 are prity much interchangable ,if your lt230 is stuffed in my eyes get a 2nd hand one and replace would be easier and probarly cheaper and they easily come off the transmission

Well obviously something isn't right here. I would be concerned about the binding issue and prob would not drive the vehicle until you find out what is causing this. Seeing as you have checked all the differentials (which is where I would have first suspected a bind to be) I'd suggest removing the case from the box and opening it up. If nothing can be found suspect in the tcase then the box is next on the list.
Good luck finding it, interested to see what the out come is.

I've just recently stopped driving my defender in front wheel drive after about 18 months And all is going fine since the prop replacement.

Generally rear trailing arm bushes tend to make the car crab walk, ass end moves around left to right a bit. New propshaft's sliding joint isn't seized, or assembled out of synch?
The centre diff is strongest when locked, since you can't have had windup when prop-shaftless, then the diff won't have been damaged by driving 4x2. Could be damaged from the prop letting go though...
