Re: SOA My 75
11 years of driving around sprung over and i have NEVER broken a spring
maybe i dont drive hard enough
considering i have done tuff truck twice
nissan trials prob half a dozen times
willow glenn 3 or so
porters road heaps, menai heaps, wederburn heaps, little river more than heaps
all spring that i use have been genuine toyota
yep and all that on small tyres 35 inches
i would not even consider shackle reversal cause if i want a 4x4 that pig roots(bounce, bounce)
its way up a hill i would buy a hilux
no offence to lux drivers
its just my opinion
yeah i do have a anti wrap bar
ops sorry for engineering it is a braking bar to stop spring twisting under hard braking
cheers

Re: SOA My 75
What are you on about? Missing the point again. Go back and re read. And NO shackle reversal didnt pig root at all. When the wheel wanted to go over something, it came up and back and climbed it much easier. The only problem is it lengthens your wheel base.
Re: SOA My 75
You might find this an interesting read chubs, http://www.ih8mud.com/tech/shackle-reason.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.
Those engineers over at Toyota probably don't know what they're on about though.

Cheers for the mixed opinions boys!
The truck is built to be a weekender as im surrounded by tracks and if i were to go tripping at 100k on a highway somewhere i would be pretty confident that my leaves wont break after some hard 4wding.
Also for a first build not everything is going to be done, had i knew more about shackle reversals than sure maybe would have done it.
The left passanger tyer in those photos was nearly full tucked and spring is pretty much at flat so shouldnt bend them to easy, and i think i ended up with 5 leaves in the front (Sprungup)
Thanks again guys ill get some good pics up soon..

hey dude love the build! looking at doing the same to mine. just a question for ya mate which leaves did you take out of the pack if you dont mind me asking ?

Re: SOA My 75
Hey mate,
If you look on page one it shows the front pack, started with 8 leaves. I took out the 6th from the bottom, the 4th from the bottom and the 2nd from the bottom. So finished with 5 leaves. Ya can't remove the main leaf up the top or the wrap leaf that loops around eyelet/ bushing.
On the rear pack I removed both load leaves real thick ones on bottom, and I think one more. But the more you removes the more wrap you'll get. I've got a very light rear end so allowed me to remove a fair bit. It differs for different utes though I guess. Just trial different amount of leafs in man.
Ask me anything when ya gonna get the process underway and I'll try to help out as much as possible mate. Was my first time too...

Found some old photos of my ute these are some form Back in 2007 after i had it for around a month, was pretty stoked on putting some stacks on it ahaha.
did that and also put a sound system in. Looked like this
so i drove it like this for ages then got a new car so neglected the poor 75 and she was driven every now and then by my old man. it was soooo loud with those 5" stacks i decided to pull em off and figured may as well build a new tray.
so here is the old tray gone
decided i wanted her bigger so 2" body lifet seemed like a good idea and also some extended shackles
then got to work on a tray
she drove like this for around a month (unfinished) and was very very ruff.
I ended up biteing the bullet and starting a spring over and thats whats brings us too know.
thought a bit of history could do everyone good on what was happening with this 75.

All I can say is thank god you got rid of those stacks! The Cruiser gods would have frowned heavily upon them.
I've been running 5 leaves in the front of mine and I'm still getting pretty bad axle wrap, but I guess the v8 and 37's would probably make it worse.

Hahaha. I know we all make mistakes lol. Quite embarrassing hey, I have seen the light though. Lol.
Yeah the old 1hz wont wrap my front haha. So should be right. But still getting my head around the concept on how to build trac bar. I can't really see how to build it properly. I'm researching some builds to get ideas..

If you look at mine, I think I am going to change to the shackle method instead of the slip method, I think it will work better that way.

Yeah i had a look at yours, i think ill got the shackle method as well.
Here is a pick i made to try and get the idea of what to build i know its simple, and gay cos on paint but to be honest the building of it seems pretty simple. what do i need to watch out for. Shackle angle?

Re: SOA My 75
instead of a bush at the end of the bar use a decent heim joint with misc spacers. This will stop it binding so much. Use bushes for everything else though to absorb some of the load.

I found a few pics of my reverse shackle set up. Its a complete bolt on kit I had made. Hope these pics help anyone wanting to do it in the future.
Re: SOA My 75
Looks good mate , but how exactly is it bolt on. Do you sill have to cut off hangers??
And how much did oh have to space your driveshaft??
I have offset holes on my spring perches, was thinking I could send the diff foward doing that
But wasn't sure how much changes will need to be made and if that's a smart idea.
But obviously Spring reversal is smartest...

Re: SOA My 75
See the angled brackets and the pipe under the bull bar. It bolts upto your bull bar holes and bolts through your existing hangers. Drops down 50mm and then your reversed springs bolt to them. I got my top 2 springs lengthened by 50mm and custom made some shackles to fit. I cant remember how much I got my drive shaft extended nor can I remember how far I located the diff forward (was a while ago). But it was like driving on coils after that. The pic was just before I sold it - Thus how low its sitting and the tyres. I found that it climbed things a hell of alot easier, as the wheel came back and up instead of trying to go forward and up. Handled exactly the same on the road.
Re: SOA My 75
Well put my front shocks in and tried to get some photos couldnt find a camera again so good old Iphone played its role in getting the following shots
An all too common site when building a 4x4 machine!!
In middle of grinding off old shock tower
and shes in..... (need to beef up the leafs some more to increase curve and put shock stroke into 40/60 position)
Just thought id put this in aswell.
Just the rears to go and it can be cruisen at 100k down the road with out feeling like a boat...

Hey mate i was looking at the pic of your shock hoops, it doesn't look like you've plated the chassis or braced the shock hoop....might be a good idea to brace the back of the hoop at least. Here's a photo of mine hope it helps.

Re: SOA My 75
I just read this and some other comments about axle wrap in the front diff. This isn't necessarly a function of power or tyres, just poor spring set up and driving it hard into obstacles.sprungupcruiser wrote:All I can say is thank god you got rid of those stacks! Fix it by clamping the front springs with 2 clamps evenly spaced behind the diff and one in the middle in front of the diff. Allow for 5mm space between clamp bolt and spring at resting height. Will barely affect flex and will solve axle wrap/snapped front pinions.
For rear diff - wrap bar/ladder bar as suggested.
