any warn (or other makes for that matter) can have a 24v motor fitted. give the winch Doctor a call and find out what the go is for getting a 24v motor, see if there's any winches you should avoid, then start shopping the trading post/ebay.

What are the basic differences between say high mount and low mount, PTO. What kind of bull bar do i need etc

Cheers

the warn 8274 high mount has the motor up above the spool, they take up a lot of space in front of the grille, but are faster, more reliable and run cooler than the low mount winches. they also hold a lot more rope - about 50 - 60m of 8mm wire rope or 90m of plasma. you need a high-mount winch bar which has an open top centre section to clear the motor and gearbox.

the low mounts (like the HS9500 which is the pick of the low mounts, it is the fastest low mount and with a snatch block can pull 15000 pounds faster than the 15000 poun winch alternative) fit completely inside the lower section of the bullbar so look neater and do not obstruct airflow to the engine bay, but run slower and hotter than the high mount, hold only about 30 - 40m of wire rope, and they are not recommended for use with plasma as the heat generated can cause the plastic rope to degrade very quickly. low mount winches will fit in most winch bars, the HS9500 is a bit wide though and may require bar mods to some low mount bars.

a PTO winch runs off an extra gearbox bolted to the gearbox or transfer case, which is fairly vehicle specific. you have a shaft that runs forward from the PTO (Power Take-Off) box to the winch, the winch is powered by the vehicle engine. the downside is if the engine is drowned or upside down the winch will not run. the upside is these are the fastest winches, they can run at any speed under any load. they are lighter than electric winches but there is extra weight in the PTO gearbox and shafts. the toyota PTO winch will hold about 50m of 8mm steel rope, or 80m of plasma. the thomas PTO winch will easily take 60m of steel rope or 100m of plasma. unless you have one of these factory fitted the fitting is custom and a bit fiddly.

your other alternative is a hydraulic winch but the cost of setting them up properly with a dedicated hydraulic pump (as opposed to running them off the power steering pump) is prohibitive. hydraulics run fairly cool and can winch all day long, and are lighter than electric or PTO winches, but they are expensive and a bit slow at high loads.
