hilux 2.8L, 3L diesel motor boost pressure
i know all the after market turbo companies say to run boost between 6-11psi, im just curious on if there are people running more. if so what pressure and if any mods were done for it, and how long been running for.??
any info would be great...

Re: hilux 3L boost pressure
My bro ran 13 psi for ages.
I have heard a story that the n/asp 3L dont like boost much above this level as they break head bolts - I have no idea if this is correct or not

Re: hilux 3L boost pressure
did he give the engine a hard time or go pretty easy on it.?
Re: hilux 3L boost pressure
My bro never went easy on anything.
But he looked after it with good oils, servicing, boost and EGT guages etc

Re: hilux 3L boost pressure
There is a lot more to it than boost pressure, fuel, timing, intercooler, exhaust , and even the type of turbo you run etc all play a part in how much boost you can safely run. IE a CT20 is known to really "beat up" the incomming charge and realy heat it up .. limiting it's effieciency and the max boost it can safely put into a motor..

Re: hilux 3L boost pressure
with out sounding like a smart ass i realize there is alot in boost pressure etc... my question is to find out a high boost figure and what was done to achieve it if anything..? and also the results, longevity of engine etc..
Re: hilux 2.8L, 3L diesel motor boost pressure
The stock CT-20 wastegate actuator on my engine is set at 11psi.
I imagine the easiest way to get higher boost would be to fit a different actuator that holds the wastegate closed until a higher boost level.
Or wire the wastegate shut.

Re: hilux 2.8L, 3L diesel motor boost pressure
I ran 11psi with a 2 1/2 inch straight through exhaust. After fitting I got the injector pump rebuilt with a fuel anaeroid (sp?) just went with what the shop said. Kept it for several years, probably about 100,000klm after fitting, lots of 4wding, lots of highway never had an issue, always ran great.
Re: hilux 2.8L, 3L diesel motor boost pressure
Ive got the 1KZTE ive been running 20 pound of boost, for last 3 years with list of mod ask away
Re: hilux 2.8L, 3L diesel motor boost pressure
land cruiser power i am unfamiliar with your engine but whats the difference between yours and a 5Lte and is there any same parts used in the 3L.? but start listing mate, i am keen to see what other people have done to their engines running higher boost or other mods to gain anymore power but maintaining some what reliability..
my aim is build a truck that's reliable but can sit on the freeway 120 comfortably while towing either the bikes or camper trailer without hills pretty much stopping us.. i also have 33inch tires..
i have just finished bolting on my turbo and need to get the injector pump timed up and tuned. i have got a diesel gas injection kit installed just not running yet (getting turbo sorted 1st) i `am running a 21/4inch hi flow exhaust (was told by the turbo company according to their dyno results the 21/4 system gives best torque results but if needed i`ll run a 3inch.?) a K&N air filter and about to start on the snorkel followed by water to air inter cooler.. i have done a fair bit of research on all of this and feel i have a pretty good idea on whats what but not claiming to know everything and open to any suggestions and finer details..
i`am unsure on what boost to be running (hoping for 11 before inter cooler and maybe 16-18 after got inter cooler installed) but waiting see how it runs with the gas system running to exactly what boost and or a dual boost controller (with the lower value for long term use and higher for short stints eg steep hills etc, knowing that cause it mechanical injection it will be running lean on higher boost- so is it worth going to that trouble.?)

Pretty big ask for an old 3L, and their weak gearboxes.mid stroke wrote: my aim is build a truck that's reliable but can sit on the freeway 120 comfortably while towing either the bikes or camper trailer without hills pretty much stopping us.. i also have 33inch tires..
For all the effort and the power you seek, it might be worth considering a new powerplant, or go for a different vehicle.
My Bro's one with 13psi, intercooler, 3"dump and 2.5"exhaust was no firebreather, but managed to shatter the original gearbox. Went fora Dyna box conversion from Marks and it is still pretty heartbreaking when a B=double hauls out from behind you going uphill, snatches another gear and dissapears over the top of the hill while you and your camper trailer are driving along at Grandpa speed
Re: hilux 2.8L, 3L diesel motor boost pressure
shit clanky bit heavy eh... haha
i`ve got the R150F box behind it not the G52..

Is the G52 a broken R150?mid stroke wrote:shit clanky bit heavy eh... haha

Re: hilux 2.8L, 3L diesel motor boost pressure
the 3L will do it fine.
I ran 11psi with a little extra fuel, watched my pyros to ensure i didn't cook it and towed over a ton with the aero dynamics of a brick (worse than a caravan) up and down the east coast. it would tow at 100 - 110 depending on my mind frame and how much of a rush i was in. without the trailer 120 was easy to cruise at.
It really did very well - it died on some bigger hills but you have to expect that from an old motor.
I've never heard of hilux boxes having trouble with hwy work? they don't make enough torque in high gears so i cant see them breaking much stuff.
The 1kz is nothing like the 5LE - appart from both being toyota and 3 litre diesels nothing else is comparable in componentry or technology. ignore any details on the 1kz - they are irrelevant to the 2-5L series engines - unless you are keen for a big $ conversion which would cost more than your truck is currently worth.
