Hey Guys,
Just want to know what temp i should be sitting around at with my pyro gauge, I have a 1hz with a safari turbo, fully rebuilt and just ran in.
What boost should it also be sitting on? Im not chasing massive horsepower just want a littlt more low down torque and abit more poke up hills.
Also does anyone know a good place around brissy up to bundaberg that i can get it dyno tuned by someone who has done this before, as anyone around my area seems to have no idea or are guessing.
In the future i will be getting a water to air intercooler, but am still looking for one at a decent price.

Where is your pyro thermocouple located? Before or after the turbo?
General rule of thumb is 650 deg before and 550 deg after.
12 to 15 psi is fine depending on afrs.

Can't comment on temps as I never had a gauge. But running 13-14lb in my 2000-model HJZ105 gave me 5 cracked pistons and 6 cracked preco chambers after 120,000km.Roffy88 wrote:Hey Guys,

In the subsequent rebuild, I discovered that around 1999 Toyota changed the pistons of the 1Hz to a lighter design with thinner tops. Rebuilder's opinion was that the 13-14 would have been fine with the old-style pistons, but was too much for the new ones.

Fairly safe bet to say lack of temperature monitoring or excess EGTs was your real problem. Boost is not a problem in itself, let your temps get too high is going to lead to certain failure

The auto elec who installed the pyro put the temp sender in the exhaust right behind the turbo, is that a correct spot? so you wouldnt want your temps to go over 650 max?

The pyro can be mounted in the manifold before the Turbo or in the dump/exhaust after the Turbo.
You lose some temp through the Turbo so 550 post is roughly equal to 650 pre turbo. The temp you look for with the position of your pyro would be 550, assuming you use those temps as a guide.
650/550 seem like pretty good/safe guidlines to me. In my Hilux I have the pyro mounted in the manifold and have never seen over 650.

Far better to have the probe in the manifold just before the turbo. Temperature can vary dramatically before and after turbo, saying it is a100 degree difference is really just guess work, EGTs could be up to 250degrees cooler after passing through the turbo. I've seen charts with temperatures recorded before and after turbo on the same engine, the variation is surprising. I would not rely on having a probe after the turbo.
550 after the turbo could be anything up to 800 pre-turbo which puts your engine at risk of damage, so 550 after turbo is a gamble
Maximum safe EGTs measured before the turbo is 750 BUT that leaves no safety margin.
