Hilux diff goes clunk

Post by muddylux »

The diff in the Lux has gone clunk, not real bad but it's making one hell of a noise but still drives.

So i'm up to speed with pulling the centre, but not to sure as to swapping the ARB locker into a new centre. I'm almost certain that its either the crown or pinion thats got a chipped tooth or 3.

Now what to do .... Can i just get another crown and pinion from another diff centre and slap it in the old centre, or am i better off swapping the locker into the new centre instead ?

If I was you it'd be new C+P bout $400 brand new then you know the diff center is good. Getting another 3rd member you gotta try find the right ratio then your not 100% sure on how it's been treated. Buy new C+P and you'll be safe.

Where would I get a new C+P set from ?

And after changing out the C+P would i have to re- set up the preload on the P and the backlash as well ?

Locktup4x4 in Perth sell nitro gears. I bought a pair off them them paid $385 each.

Yeas you'll have to set them up with meshing preload and backlash. Once you pull apart and 3rd member it all has to be done anyways.

It is way easier to put the ARB locker into a new center. That way you don't have to touch the pinion shimming. Try to get a center from a front diff as they most likely haven't had as much work.

It will cost you anything from $150 - $450 for a second hand center. Easy to put the ARB locker in yourself.

For a new CW & P looking at around $380 mark. Then around that again for a diff place to set it up. Then they will want to put in new bearings as well.

Look hear for setting up a hilux diff the correct way. Maybe not as much preload on the carrier bearings if it's a daily driver as he mentions in his reports.

Can I take the front diff out and put it in the rear ? it's a air locker too.

I just don't got the $'s yet to fix it, so if i can swap front and rear centres around then i can save the dosh and rebuild later.

At the moment I have taken out the prop shaft and running in front wheel drive, would you think this will be good for 1000km till i rebuild ?

Looks like i won't be 4 wheelin for a bit..

If it's a solid axle front diff (leaf sprung) yes you can just swap the centers over. I wouldn't run around on the front but it wounldn't do any damage if the rear not being driven.

yeah I would just swap the centres over and then rebuild the front when funds permit
