1FZ-FE not starting

Post by matthew_eyles »

Hi everyone I have only had my 80 for a couple of months. Its an 93 1FZ-FE Extra cab with a steel comp tray 4" lift 33" MTZ's, F&R Arb Lockers, and a few other little mods.

My problem is that over the last week it has been idiling really high (2000rpm) and slowly comes back down after 10 mins or so. I have had it serviced 2 weeks prior, mechanic did a full check over (replaced leads, plugs, oil, filters etc), and I put a new intake hose on it as the other one was split. I have triple checked that all clamps are tight.

When I was driving home this week the instrument lights would shutter every time I hit a bump and the Fuel Tank, Air Filter, and Alternator Warning lights would come on. I went to start it the next morning and the lights mentioned were now on permanently and the car would crank but will not turn over.. I am thinking it may be the IAC Valve??or ECU possibly?

Coming from the Darkside (GU patrol) i am still new to Toyotas and am seeking any help you guys can offer.

Thanks Matt.

My 1HD-T 80 series had all of the dash lights flickering at one stage. Turned out there was dirt in the alternator plug which I had replaced a few weeks earlier. Aparrantly this can also be an alternater dying.
But this was my diesel so I'm not sure if the petrol is the same. Might be worth checking out.

thanks for the reply mate, the previous owner actually replaced the alternator before i brought it so about a month ago, i might check it out tomorrow.maybe this has shorted out something to cause the other lights to stay on..?

my other thought was maybe the MAF.

Theres a fusible link that can bugger up. it goes to the little black box on the positive cable.. mine busted and the exact same thing happened

dropping from 2000rpm back to normal is this only on first start? you realise this would be the choke? Your 80 series (same as mine) has an automatic choke that sometimes plays up / stops working its really nothing to worry about as long as the revs go back down. Although if this is constant i'd find the fuse / relay for the choke remove it then start car to see if indeed choke was the problem

with all lights coming on the dash and sometimes cranking but not starting id say you have a dicky earth cable

next time the lights are flashing pull over grab a jumper cable and put on negative and then other end to a good earth (like the engine hook) see if it stops.

Thanks Howsie, but it isnt just on start up it is continuous and seems to get worse the longer you drive.

Its not all the lights on the dash now, it is just the fuel tank, air filter, and alternator warning light (Red square above gauge) I will check the earth cables while I am it at today.

Thanks for the replies

so does it still run at all???

if the wire on the black box on the positive cable burns out the car will not start at all..

if its still running and all those lights are on, then your alt is not charging.. thats how 80's tell u that the alt isnt working..

Just a quick update for everyone, CrazyCruiser was onto it. it turns out there is a black box of the main positive terminal which feeds power to the alternator. The previous owner had dodged this up with a length of speaker wire which had fused out. I rewired this correctly and shes good as new!

Thanks for the help.
