Auto darken helmet that actually works with a TIG at 5 amps?

Post by steve patrol »

Gday

Just wrote an factural esay, then it made me log in again and deleted it :bad-words: ...

Big story short... On to my 3rd auto helmet now and im still burning my eyeballs when I go down to 5 - 10 amps with the TIG when they all state there good for 5 amps. What helmet works with a TIG at 5 amps like its supposed to? Anything is great with a MIG but I need it for TIG...

Cheers

Sweet as! I was trying to get one of them but the shop i was at talked me into the Mach 4 telling me it was better as they didn't have the Miller DE in stock. How low have you gone down to with it? I take it you have one?

Nothing to do with the question in the post.
In future if your session times out while typing a long post use the back button on the browser to go back to the text you spent ages typing. At least then you can copy paste it.

My Kemppi goes down to 3 amps (the arc is bit inconsistent at 3 and it's better at 5 amps) and My Miller Digital Elite is still able to trigger. You just have to turn the sensitivity a bit higher than usual.
The pics below is fusion welding along a couple of blade edges at 5 amps. At these extremely low amperages I find my eyesight to be the limiting factor and it was a bit of guesswork to see if it was really welding both edges or not. (I missed a little bit on the right hand side)
Sorry about the pics quality, I was trying to make the smallest fusion weld I possibly could and the camera doesn't really pick it up.
Regards Andrew.

That really is at the cutting edge

I'm impressed, but then again, I was impressed when I managed to sign my name with a #6 welding tip and silver solder while brazing 0.6mm. copper sheet :P

Miller helmet will do it but I am in the middle of buying a Speedglas 9100XX which is the best for Tig as it has 2 shade variables, light shade 3 & second darkness variation 5,8,9-13. Not cheap at $500+ but I have the original Miller Elite & the Speedglas will be for Tig as I want to get back into it.

Depending on which mode you choose (4 modes available) the Miller Digital Elite will also weld through the 5-13 filter range. The Miller also has X mode which only triggers when it senses the magnetic variation when the arc it triggered, a great feature for outdoor or welding in a bright enviroment.
Horses for courses, my mate uses Speedglas and I use Miller, we've both swapped helmets for comparisons but neither of us will change our preferences.
I don't think you can go wrong with either brand, they are both quality helmets.
