how do i remove timming gear 3F ???
I have a 92 80 series with a 3F. It has stripped the timing gear.
I need help im not sure how to get what is left of it off the end of the cam? I have removed the sir clip
Any help would be very much appreciated. Also when i go to fit the new gear is it as simple as just lining up some dots on the two cogs?

If you can not get there in a 4wd its not worth looking at

You need to take the cam out and put it in a press. It is a bastard of a job. I used a 50 ton press and it was putting in some effort before it popped off.
You might be able to grind the side of remains of your existing ( dont hit the camshaft with the grinder ) one to release the pressure and it should come off easier.
I used the press to put the new one on too, with a little bit of engine oil to stop it galling on the way down.
replacement timing gear is around $70 from Terrain Tamer
Easy to line up the timing marks off the gears
You might be able to grind the side of remains of your existing ( dont hit the camshaft with the grinder ) one to release the pressure and it should come off easier.
I used the press to put the new one on too, with a little bit of engine oil to stop it galling on the way down.

If the timing gear broke when the engine was running, you might have to pull the head and get the valves checked as they may have contacted the pistons

loosen off the rockers and you will also need to remove the lifters too

Oil pump should be no problem as it is driven by the end of the distributor shaft (slot). Distributor has to come out as it is gear driven off the camshaft.DAZ wrote:thank you very much guys. Is oild pump going to be an issue?

Lifters may come out the pushrod hole if it is big enough. Some engines you can , some you cant. If you cant, head has to come off. Use a magnet or maybe your finger if you are lucky.
I didnt understand you question about valve retention. They are all retained, but if the timing sequence is out such as the case with a broken timing gear, valves can be open when they are not meant to be in relation to the crank and the piston comes up and gives them a big kiss. Left unchecked, a bent valve will eventually fail and you will need a rebuild or new motor

pull the side cover off the block behind the dizzy to get access to the lifters

i went to an engine builder in town yesterday he said $120 drop off cam and he will give it back with new timing gear fitted. He said a 3F the valves are so far away from pistons they will not hit. I refer to valve retention as they have no interferance with piston no matter how far out timing is.
I hope to get this job done next week. will post update Thanks all for your help Darren

FYI update "if i dont laugh ill cry"
Worked on the 80 tonight and removed
Grill, headlights, condenser, radiator, A/C pump. Power steer pump, air cleaner, rocker cover, dizzy, side cover, rocker gear, push rods, put my finger in lifters slid them up, pulled cam out front and plop one, of the lifters fell in grrrrrrrr im guessing its in the sump
is the sump easy to remove? dose it clear every thing or do i need to lift the motor?

firstly thanks to thoughs that offered some advise etc it helped heaps thanks.
i got the 80 back together tonight but it would not start so i rotated the dizzy 180 deg and it sort of fired when adjusted fully one way.
I removed the bolt from the dizzy and tured it a little past its adjustment it started and ran very nice. Im guessing im out one tooth or what ever it is and ill have the timing right.
The only complaint i have is they fitted a solid steel timing gear instead of the bakerlite type gear it had so it has a gear drive noise now.
