Does a 1HDT have a oil level sensor?

Post by TheBigBoy »

I am swaping out my oil pressure sensor and wanted to change my oil level sensor aswell while Im there (as I dont think it works). I can seem to find it. I have the workshop book, but it only shows the 1HZ model with the sensor in the sump. Ive checked out my sump and cant find it? Does anyone know where it is?

Mine didn't but it was a '90 model. I think they came on the later 1HZ.

My current 1HZ has it, freaked me out a couple of times when the light comes on climbing step rocky sections

On my 1HZ it is on the left side of the sump, slightly forward of where the oil filter is, you can't miss it, its fairly large.
From what you have said, yours doesn't have one.

But how can it not? I have an oil light on my dash? What sensor feeds that?

Pressure.

You either have it or you don't. If the oil pressure light lights up while the engine is running, you're pretty much farked.

Ok. So I have an oil pressure gauge, That runs off the pressure switch. And I have an oil light in my instrament panel. Is that run off the pressure switch aswell or??? Because my oil has gotten low before and there was no light at all.

I'd say that the oil light would illuminate once your oil pressure drops below a preset level. Is the oil light on when the ignition is on but engine not running?

Yep. But, currently my oil pressure sensor is screwd and not working. There is no oil pressure on the gauge at all. Wouldnt the light be on then?

Possibly a sensor for the guage and a switch for the light ;)

That would be where I'd put my money - it's very toyota like (and probably similar to a lot of other manufacturers as well.

Sender possibly? I'd just be following the oil galleries out of the oil pump and you will probably find what you're looking for - most likely pre filter.

I don't think so, from memory there is only a single write to the engine for oil pressure.it goes to the pressure sensor on the block near the starter motor.

The oil pressure, engine temp and glow plug/manifold temp sensor wires are all in the one section of wiring harness, it is on the left inner guard and Crosses to the engine beside the starter motor

Even toyota doesnt know. They said there is only the 1 sensor. So maybe it controls both. I will get a new sensor to be sure and check all the wiring.

Hi Bigboy,
Your post seems to have gone dead about the oil level switch but on my 92 model 1 hdt motor the oil pressure switch is locatated just in from of the starter motor it has 2 wires connected to it 1 goes to guage other is an earth.
Oil level switch is located on the left hand side of motor just under oil filter in the sump held on by 4 small bolts & 1 wire it has a arm with a float type set-up on it
When oil level drops below a given amount on incline the oil warning light comes on ( that oil can one) then when U level out it will go out

If an oil level sensor fails it's likely to cause the oil level light to be on all the time. Personally I'm quite capable of checking the oil level occassionally myself rather than paying the small fortune a new sensor costs.
When the one in my HiAce failed I just shorted it out.

I have a new oil pressure sensor. Thats easy. But, when the old oil pressure sensor failed, and the gauage read zero. The oil light still did not come on.
