The v8 is a much nicer engine to drive as it has torque from idle but uses heaps of fuel in comparison. The price of v8's is a fair bit lower .

I have a TD5 that puts out the same power as the V8 after remapping the chip and still has reasonable economy.

I have both
V8 is in an 03 D2a Manual.
Pro's - nice to drive - sounds great - relatively good economy on a run (13-15l/100) - smooth, quiet, and refined. Goes ok when thrashed, cheaper to buy and service.
Con's - more hoses under the bonnet than I ever though would be required. - will need head gaskets. ours has done 109k and it is weeping water on the front of the left bank - You do not want to overheat them - ever. Use a lot of fuel around town or when thrashed.
TD5 (mine is in a D90 but also run an 03 d2a manual with a td5)
Pro's - remarkably good on fuel. 9-12.5l/100 everywhere really - fairly easy to work on - can be remapped for about $450 to produce more power than the v8. Can produce a lot of power if you are that was inclined
Cons - Have a stupid dual mass flywheel in the manuals - swap it out for a solid one when you do a clutch - oil in injector harness (about $150 fix every 6 -8 years) - You do not want to over heat them - ever! - Some parts are expensive - more expensive to service (2 oil filters, fuel filter etc) Fuel pumps seem a weak point.
Back to back at 100kmh in 5th gear the td5 in the 90 destroys the v8 in the D2 in terms of acceleration.
I like both really.
Which ever engine you go for, keep an eye on the front propshaft.. the dc joints are known to fail.

The TD5's had a pretty good rep for reliability, but we're starting to see a fair few come through work now they are hitting over 200 000 k's. best case for heads, worst case for whole engines. now we don't normally see many older cars in our workshop, but we've done 9 td5 engine swaps in the last year, and at least 15 heads. v8's do head gaskets, but usually it's not a catastrophic failure (as in, if you don't mind some oil weep, you can keep driving them for ages).
Other common td5 failures include injector seal failures, which tend to richen up one of the cylinders, and melt pistons. and don't forget the Fuel block, which is a common failure point, especially to pass roadworthy and costs about a grand to fix.
And the v8 is much cheaper to repair when you do have to fix it...
