wiring starter button instead of key

Post by cookiesmonsta »

can someone please help me to work out how to wire up a starter switch and button in place of the standard ignition.

i had one key and always left it in the ignition (comp car only) but the other half decided it should be removed. now i have no key

I'm looking to put one switch for acceseries and another for ignition then a button to start the engine but cant make out the wiring( i can start some pretty good fires with 12v so i'm not experimenting too much)

thanks cookie

p.s. should have added that it is a dx 80 series

For starters grab a workshop manual and in the back is a wiring diagram. find the relevant diagram indicating the ignition circuit. Usually in the steering colounm is first place to look at the back of the ign switch follow the wires down and will find the wires coloured which will match up to what is in the workshop manual telling you what the hell they do. Easy as mount the switches get main battery power run it through the switches to put power on the wires which are start acc and on.

Thanks mate,
I've got the plug off the back of the ignition so i guess the next move is to buy a manual for the heap and start reading

usually there is one wire thicker than the rest, this will be your 12v feed, using a cheepy light globe wiring tester is the best for test commecting. Because if u mess up and dead short it it will just light up instead of shorting, you'll be able to sort out what is what pretty quickly

Just take a pic, note the wire colours, there is a chance it will pretty much be doable from there without a diagram due to toyota wire colours being pretty consistent.

I'd bet a miniscule amount of money that it will be the Black with white stripe. Unfortunately I don't have a miniscule amount of money to my name so I'll just make the helpful suggestion instead...
