Power steering fluid /ATF

Ok building a new car for next years Tuff Truck and running a PSC pump they say to only run Power steering fluid but I have always thought and been told that ATF is the same .

Can anyone shed some light on this for me or whats everyone else running that has a PSC pump?

Duncan your best to get the oil spec off them, as i was under the assumption PSC will not warrant anything using atf oil in it... most are using a hydraulic fliud, normally 68. Have a chat to chris he will be able to tell you..

Both ATF and PSF are hydraulic fluids, the viscosity can be different (PSF is heavier) and ATF has more detergents in it to deal with friction from clutch packs in auto Trans.

PSF can have anti foaming agents in it also.

Castrol make PSF. I don't know the specs though.

Redline make a power steer oil that conforms with psc's requirements. Its expensive though something like $40 a litre. Using it in adams car at the moment, does the job with no noise at all.

68 hydraulic oil won't airate like ATF

FYI Some useless info, GM Holden Use Dexron 6 in the power steering and auto transmission of VE commodores.

I've always just used ATF and never had an issue. Heck I have known people to use a light engine oil successfully although I haven't gone that far myself.

But that doesn't mean I recommend it, especially if you have an expensive pump and you want it covered by warranty.

you could run engine coolant in it ( water glyco) if you were really keen.. but yeah fluid type is pretty much dependat on system life... look at coolers etc before you start going to a speciic hydraulice fluid... there are lots of them... and converting them from bhp/onesteel numbers is beyond me atm
