80 series fuel gauge
hi i bought a 1996 gxl diesel 80 series landcruiser a few months ago it has dual tanks ad both of the guages on them are staying at full an not coming down the tafe trainer at work said he had seen this problem before but forgot wat they did to fix it. i have tried cleaning pluges on the tanks and checked for fusses but there odesnt seem to be anything wrong i am hoping to not have to pull the tanks out. does any one knows anything or experienced this before and how how do u fix it ?

Something similar just recently happened to my diesel 80. Turns out one of the baffles in my main tank had torn off at all but 1 of the spots it was spot welded onto the tank. So it was flapping about in the tank and it had gotten the sender unit float caught on the top of it.
All it took was 10 mins with a pair of tin snips to chop the broken baffle out.
Very difficult to see with a full tank of diesel. If it's full you'll have to stick your hand in and fish around for it. The one that come loose on mine was towards the back of the car.
A simple way to check if your sender and gauges are working is to take the sender out of the tank and plug it into the wiring harness out of the tank and work the sender unit to see if the gauges move. If they move they will go very slow so be patient.

Hi Pat,
If U remove the back seats & carpet U will find an inspection cover held in place by about 8 self tapers under it is the fuel pick-ups & fuel guage U could remove the unit test movement of float see if it's working properly put a jumper cable from sender unit body to an earth on vechicle U should be able to if guage works by moving float arm thru it's travell & watch dash gauge. Sorry forgot to mention this is only the main tank sub tank is further back above spare tyre.
This also sounds to me as though the wires going to fuel tanks are going to earth somewhere along the body.
