Very true. I used a Dawn bender for my internal and external. Other than the inability to do bends close to one another it was a good bender.johnsy86 wrote:you can get good bends from a bow n arrow style and there not really that expensive, the one thing u will need to spend some coin on tho is a decent die this is what will give u a good bend.

Re: tube bender
yeah but dont use any of those dies there all crap invest in a decent die, depending on what size steel u wanna use, i use 32nb steel for my exos and bar work so have die to suit that od.

Re: tube bender
If your using a cheaper bender like that be sure to convert the outside rollers into slide blocks. The rollers tend to dent thinner walled pipe. Weld a piece of pipe to it thats cut in half like a bit of c section. Bend it out a little wider so it has clearance. If the pipe you are bending has no surface protection on it like laqure, galv or paint spray the slide block and die with a little crc or inox to ensure you dont get gouges on your bends.

Re: tube bender
i bought one of these and its rubish.
ive tried thin walled pipe, thick walled, bending on the seam, off the seam, full of sand, bending slow, fast, everything i can think of except heating it before bending.
the seller offered me my money back, but i declined because i wanted to get it working.
heres where my problem lies, the die marked 1 1/2" (40mm) actually measures 47mm, my tube is 48.3 or something so i tried to grind it out to match the pipe, but this didnt work very well. The tube muffin topped out the top of the die and kinked to buggery.
I thought this might be because the radious was too tight, so i measured the die marked 2" (50mm) and it measures as 60mm, so i thought righto, ill buy some 5mm plate and make some shims to fill it up. after alot of cutting and grinding i made the two plates and tack welded them in, but still looked crap so thats failed.
Im at the stage now where i need to buy a dawn die for this bender, i think its going to cost me around $150. oh well such is life.

Re: tube bender
Im torn between the JD2 32 and Pro Tools as TMR have alot cheaper shipping and would save me having to go through 123 engines to import the JD2, all up with courier from melbourne it was $195 postage I think plus the $50 to get it to 123 engines depot in the US.
From what I can see the JD2 32 is alot better bender, anti spring back etc and the pro tools is more like the JD2 3.

I was hoping I would tougen up as I went along, turn into a real muscle bound heman, but all I keep doing is injuring the same arm
Might extend the handle I reckon.
Re: tube bender
Yep looong handle and loong arms . I bend medium 40nb. Wouldnt say its easy, it is hard work. But, definately worth the effort.
Why do you want to go to all the trouble to import them? Just give opw a call.

When I priced mine up with shipping, it was the same price to just get it from opw. The bender itself is cheap, its the dies that make the money.

OPW pricing

Fair enough. Just remember to oil it. Its a machined finish and the exposed bits will rust when moisture in the air. good luck

Re: tube bender
123 engines mate, if you get it through metal by the foot off ebay you get free shipping on die in america. Note however you will blow the $1000 mark with the hydro setup plus one die and have to pay custom taxes.

I've got one for 40NB pipe you can have for $50 if you want. You just need to get it down from Wollongong.nethergate wrote:Im at the stage now where i need to buy a dawn die for this bender, i think its going to cost me around $150. oh well such is life.

Re: tube bender
This is what i mean by turning the roller into a slide block. Before modification the roller would leave large dents either side of the bend, 15 mins and a bit of heavy wall pipe scrap later and it bends like a champ!

Re: tube bender
that looks like a great modification mate, im going to have to do that!
I bought a 40nb Dawn die off Nelso (thanks mate!) and its a ripper!
it does a perfect job on the tube i had which was 5mm wall thickness, and does a nearly as good a job on the 2mm but leaves a small kink which is still passable.
I am yet to make a shim so it fits my bender perfectly but ill get there.
anyway heres a pic, one bend (the good one) is with the dawn die i bought of Nelso, and the other bend if you could call it that is done with the die that came with the unit.

Re: tube bender
I've owned the supercheap style bender before. With standard cheapy dies, and some good quality DAWN dies. The DAWNs were miles better, but the rollers still left small dents in the pipe.
I now have a speedworks bender. It uses a die and former like the JD2's, but can only bend up to 130 degrees ( or thereabouts). I have 25NB, 32NB and 40NB dies in 6" and 8" clr dies. This gets me just about any bend I need for most external barwork.
I also have a 1.75" (44.45mm) die set in 6 & 8 clr for CRMO, CDS, DOM cage work. All up this collection owes me a fair bit, but I have bought the dies as I needed them over a 4 or 5 year period, so its not been too bad. I don't regret spending this money at all.
