80 coils in a 4runner
Hey guys, done a search with a heap of different results but no actual answers i could find.
Ive done an SAS on a 4runner with 2'' locktup leaf springs,1'' dropped hanger and the shackles eye to eye are 5.5'' long.
Chris from locktup4x4 told me to use 2'' 80 series coils in the rear,
i searched and some people were saying 2'' 80 coils give 6'' lift in a runner and standard springs give 4''.
Can anyone actually confirm which springs i need to use?
I dont want to be using the guys money and buying springs and them being wrong.
Cheers
Justin

Re: 80 coils in a 4runner
Factory rear 80 coils in a Runner will give you 3.5"- 4" after settling depending on weight over the rear (rear bar, 2nd fuel tank, etc.).
Aftermarket std height coils will give a bit more.
Chris has been round the block a few times so should know what will work fo you. Depinding on how much barwork or added weight is on the vehicle, you may have to change coils to suit.
I would borrow a set of std or 2" raised 80 rear coils, fit them up and measure how much more you will need to level it out + some settling in.

Re: 80 coils in a 4runner
Tried 3 sets in my old 4runner.
Stock IFS 100s gave similar lift to 2" lift 80s, about 6" over standard.
Factory height progressive 80 series coils from dobinsons gave a neat 4" (and coped better with the extra weight of the rear bar and spare tyre)

Is that what you settled on in the runner Twisty?TWISTY wrote: Factory height progressive 80 series coils from dobinsons gave a neat 4" (and coped better with the extra weight of the rear bar and spare tyre)
I heard progressive will give you comfy ride but hamper flex. Yours seemed to flex well in the rear.

Yeah mate, progresive standard height 80 series Dobinsons was what I ended up running. Was really happy with them. They flexed well for both up and down travel.

Re: 80 coils in a 4runner
Georgey,
I think I still have a set of stock 105series springs sitting around if you want to try them, they ar interchangeable with 80series, not sure if the lengths are the same though.
I'm on the Central Coast, but have been working in Cessnock area, might be able to meet you somewhere if you want to try them

Re: 80 coils in a 4runner
If your gonna buy some anyway i'd be speaking to dobbinsons in qld they did the rears for my 4runner after trying a few different spring including 80 series standard springs but all were way too stiff, ended up getting mine made off a surf template but much softer.

Re: 80 coils in a 4runner
Theyre not for my car, dont want to be waiting on them to get made and to be sent down.
Car needs to be out of here by next weekend.
Ill be using whatever springs pedders has in stock, the bottom of the spring will be retained and will be running 10'' bilsteins.
All the customer wants is it to sit level, not worried about carrying weight and it will flex with only one side of the coil retained.

Re: 80 coils in a 4runner
Went to put the 2'' coils in the 4 runner today, they would not fit in!!
Had the hi lift jacking up the rear end so the tyres were off the ground, shocks out, panhard off, sway bar off, brake line disconnected.
The coils were phisically too big to fit in and didnt have a coil compressor, even if i did get them in they would have been way too tall and the arms wouldve had to be lengthened or something.
Going to try standrd 80 series coils tomorrow which should fit in hopefully

Re: 80 coils in a 4runner
You should unbolt the top arms and loosen the bolts for the bottom arms before you do as well, they do settle a bit and yeh you need to lift it a fair bit to get them in.
I like to do mine with a forklift, I run 5" lifted surf coils and it has to come up a fair way before they slot in.

Re: 80 coils in a 4runner
If you can't get them in with the shocks off and panhard off then they are too big.
Pedders springs will be way too stiff for a 4 Runner at ant rate.

Re: 80 coils in a 4runner
Standard 80 series coils leveled it out perfectly.
Took it for a run last night and the springs are pretty soft, flex well too for the standard arms.
