Transfer case chain problems

Post by andylux »

Looking for some advice on transfer case chain.
The problem started with a loss of drive to front wheels after getting bogged with camper being towed.
When i got home put up on stands and turned the front drive shaft and had a clunking from transfer case.
I have just drained the oil from transfer no meal bits in the oil but noticed looking into the drain hole that the drive chain has slipped off.Firstly can i put a new chain on assuming no gears are chipped. Can this be done by pulling the back of the transfer or do i need to pull the whole case apart.
Can i use a T/C from another model hilux mine is a rzn169 2001 2.7 with 5 speed manual box.

Thanks for any help i can get..

I've never seen a chain slip off, usually just jump a tooth when under load and you get a shudder & noise from the drivetrain. It's been ages since I replaced one and I can't remember if it can be done without removing the transfer. Either way it would be much easier to do the work on a bench, it doesn't take long to remove a transfer in a hilux. I have a complete spare transfer out of an auto V6 Hilux, only has about 5000km on it, chains are the same as 4 cyl mode, not sure about input shafts etc. Free to a good home if you want to pick it up.

drr Thanks for the reply and offer of chain.
I got hold of a low k chain this morning courtesy of local 4x4 wrecker and have already fitted it .I was able to fit it with just removing the rear cover.
The old chain was nearly 50mm longer than the new one.So it was totaly stretched and stuffed.Luckily no other damge was done .

That's a lot of stretch, it must have done a lot of work. Good to hear it wasn't an issue swapping it over.
