Anyone had a 80 series manual gearbox beefed up before?
I've got a 93 factory turbo with a bit of work that's pushing 150 rwkw and 500 nm of torque and my gearbox has said enough is enough.
Took it to the gearbox place, they pulled it apart and said it's cactus inside and gonna cost around $3500 to rebuild.
I asked if they could get any stronger parts for it to beef it up a bit but they rekon no one makes anything.
Has anyone heard of any stronger aftermarket parts to suit these boxes?
Just don't want to go through with rebuilding it using factory parts just to have it let go on me again

Not sure about aftermarket parts but 3500 is a bit steep I've seen fully reco'd boxes go on eBay for 2500. From what I've read landcruiser boxes are their weak point and.most people how want to push more power replace box with a different one. Well box and rear hubs.

Have a look at the 4wd websites I'm sure I've seen adapters for other boxes out there. Btw landcruiser boxes can not be driven like a normal car they don't like it there should definatly be a neutral between gear changes. If.you want to thrash it or snap gears and do turnout and other stuff even a brand new cruiser box won't do.you any good.

Btw not saying you do any of this just something to keep in mind.

dont know the number, its in gosford nsw. area
his been around a long time, but not cheap.

You don't need to give me a driving lesson I know how to shift the cruiser box, $3500 isn't bad considering it includes new input shaft,new cluster, new gears, new bearings and all new synchros, the ebay boxes are just second hand items with new bearings thrown in them, I'd rather spend the extra grand and get fresh everything.

I'll try central coast gearboxes cheers :)

dyna light truck gearbox? When I was doing a bit of a search for my rocky, this came up as an option for stronger driveline, apparently you can make a landcruiser transfer fit behind them. But i didn't really look much further into it.

Yep, their right. They said to me not much goes wrong with them when I got mine rebuilt. Some people are running more power than yours and holding up fine. I think your was just tired and it was its time. I couldnt find any after market parts to make it stronger either.

beleive it or not, dyna gearbox is a lighter duty box than the 80series boxes.

the 80 series box is about as tough as it gets for cruisers, they have the largest shafts, and wide gears etc. later model 80series had slightly different synchro rings to help smooth shifts out as the early 80s were a bit clunky

I agree with the others, either its time was up, or you need a driving lesson :D :finger: 150rwkw and 500nm is not excessive for this box.

There is a mob in WA doing exchange HD Boxes. Father in law just had one fitted to a 78 series towing 3.5 tonne van. Not certain if they do one for the 80 though. I will ask him and see if he can give me some details. Might be of help.

Not sure how mechanically savvy you are but have you considered rebuilding it yourself. Lot of work getting it in and out but could end up considerably cheaper. Just.need a few mates silly enough to give you a hand. My mate saved almost 500 doing his vitals gearbox this way. He brought a stuffed box and rebuilt it. Then if we had any idea what we were doing we could have done it over a weekend but it was an auto. manual box would be easier If heavier.

How much work had your box done though?

IMO those levels should not be much of a problem for the H150/151 gearbox. The same gearbox is used in the new v8 TD 70 series no worries, even chipped up ones etc which would pull similar outputs.

If the box is fresh and in good condition it should be fine.

Its actually making 480nm at 3k without any correction (150rwkw at 3k ~480nm crank equivalent rpm at wheels). At 2k its very likely over 600nm at crank. My calculator (that has an assumed efficiency curve vs rpm built in) says 620nm based on same fuel inj rate but at 2000rpm.

Very strong, but still not box breaking you would have thought

I thought about rebuilding my box for about 5 seconds. All the snap rings and circlips. Forget it. And then the thing weights a tonne :). Cost me $2500 for box and trans full rebuild. Im happy to pay that and have a warrantee.

The vehicle it came out of had done 330000 km but i believe it had been pulled out and rebuilt by a previous owner at some time.
It didn't appear there was anything wrong with it, shifted fine then all of a sudden lost fourth gear and started clunking.
Anyways if no one knows of anything that can be done to beef them up then I'll just have to get it rebuilt and hope for the best

80 boxes are pretty tuff, and i would say wat u are pushing thru it is well within its limits.. mines done over 350 original k's and still going strong

Yeah not too sure what happened to mine but it was destroyed, gave the gearbox mob the go ahead to rebuild it today so should hopefully be ready when I get home just in time for the trip down south :armsup:
Hopefully it will last ;)

i'm fairly sure you would find the heavy duty box supplied would be an 80 series box, some 78,79 & 105series had r151 boxes which are nowhere near as strong as the 'h'series boxes in 80 series
