Supercharged holden v6 stopped going
well everything was going good, now no go..
Fully rebuilt VS Calais supercharged V6 engine with rebuilt Auto box with marks4wd interface loom running off a push button start in a willys jeep.. .
was starting/running sweet but had no alt charge so the few startups without an alt drained the battery as expected
no worries - charged the batteries up today while measuring up and working out how im gonna make my X member.. finished charging bat's and went to start
no go
relay on the dash clicks but the starter solenoid doesnt
tried to bridge the starter to eliminate a wiring prob - the starter clicked into action but turned over very very slowly and heated up the earth strap from block to chassis..
tried to turn motor over by hand from the balancer with a socket and bar and the motor wont even turn by hand now ???
it started and idled for bout 30sec yesterday arvo and the only thing thats been done between then and now was to charge the batteries and put some more oil down the gearbox dipstick tube to compensate for longer oil cooler lines
HELP?
Re: Supercharged holden v6 stopped going
Sounds like either something has got really tight (main bearings) or it's hydraulic locked. Maybe an injector has jammed open.......
Try pulling the spark plugs and seeing if it will turn over without the plugs in it.
I assume it was run for some time previously? Have you only just bolted up a new trans or changed anything else?

Re: Supercharged holden v6 stopped going
trans is a 2nd hand one but had the internals checked/serviced when i had the output shaft changed over (marks adaptor to GU tcase)
will go rip the spark plugs out and let you know in 10 min..

Re: Supercharged holden v6 stopped going
plugs are out.. still no go - its locked solid tried turning it both ways
was running sweet yesterday afternoon no noises no nothing...

Re: Supercharged holden v6 stopped going
I would be unbolting the torque converter bolts to the flex plate then try turning the engine. Then you can see if its the engine or gearbox
Re: Supercharged holden v6 stopped going
yea but how do i turn the flex plate to get to the top torque converter bolts?
Re: Supercharged holden v6 stopped going
If worse comes to worse, you'll have to remove all the bellhousing bolts and rotate the gearbox around. On that note, try supporting the gearbox, unbolting it and sliding it back enough to clear the dowels and then try and turn the engine...Ryan wrote:yea but how do i turn the flex plate to get to the top torque converter bolts?

Re: Supercharged holden v6 stopped going
could it be something simple like the car has to be in park to start and it isn't, i know my old commondore v6 and auto i had in my nav it had a sensor and it wouldn't turnover unless it was in park with a bit of weight agaist the shifter.
Re: Supercharged holden v6 stopped going
That won't stop the engine from being turned over by hand...Waitesy wrote:could it be something simple like the car has to be in park to start and it isn't, i know my old commondore v6 and auto i had in my nav it had a sensor and it wouldn't turnover unless it was in park with a bit of weight agaist the shifter.

Re: Supercharged holden v6 stopped going
Mmmm, ok.
If you undo the bell housing bolts you should be able to remove the trans by sliding it back... The torque converter will stay attached to the flex plate and slide off the input shaft. But I,d guess it not the auto.
From what you said, it ran, then wouldn't start, then got harder to turn over, then locked up....... Definitely engine.
Are you sure it's got the correct dipstick in it and you haven't filled the sump completely? What does the coolant look like?
Looks like engine out.... But before you do, I'd drain the oil out and have a look, color, water in it? How much drains out? Also pull a rocker cover and have a look.

Re: Supercharged holden v6 stopped going
That's the strange part tho it never really got hard to start- just went from running good one min- then shut down overnight and when i went to start it today nothing happened :(
Oil / water are both clean and it's definatly the right amount but even if it wasn't it hasn't ran above idle or for long enough to even get warm yet? Longest it's ran was bout 20sec last weekend to make sure it started lol
Thanks for ur help sofar mate will keep you updated with what happens tomorrow- ttc is way too close for this to be happening lol :(
At least the beer fridge is full heheh

Re: Supercharged holden v6 stopped going
Sounds like it has been starved for oil.
Even at idle it will only take a few seconds of no lubrication to strip the bearings.
Who built the engine?
Ive seen a few times people forgetting to put the gasket or oring on the pickup to block mating surface which has caused issues like this.

Re: Supercharged holden v6 stopped going
Check that the starter is not locked in the engaged position. If that failes loosen the bellhousing and then try and turn the engine over. You may not have aligned the converter into the pump properly when bolting up the auto. Seizing the pump in the auto.
Re: Supercharged holden v6 stopped going
update--
took the plugs out to see if it was a hydraulic lock- no good.
unbolted the convertor from the flex plate (managed to get motor to turn over ultra slow in short bursts with the starter)
motors still rock solid to turn... looks like its motor out time it was just startin to look good in there too lol
thanks again for your help an suggestions guys.. hope its a simple internal fix

Re: Supercharged holden v6 stopped going
I just re read and missed the fully rebuilt bit about the v6.
Could be the main bearings aren't aligned to the main oil galleries, restricted or zero oil flow hence seized, although not sure about a dunnydore v6 and how the bearings locate. Could also be a dodgy oil pump or puck up.

Re: Supercharged holden v6 stopped going
Oil starvation.....
engine out time for you.
Had the exact same issues with a VS wagon, lazy previous owners never changed the oil filter, just dumped the oil occasionally and add some new stuff...... sludge buildup eventually blocked off the oil pickup and this then caused the engine to lockup.
In your case and with a "rebuild", the likelyhood is that either the bearings miss-alignment OR the engine wasnt cleaned well enouigh prior to the rebuild.
The S/C v6 has oil galleries that are the same size as std non forced engine galleries, IMO they are WAY too small for the additional load from the S/C for the engine to cope with ...... most S/C owners agree as its a common mod to drill out the galleries on S/C engines for better flow/pressure readings, especially when chasing a few extra killawasps.
My S/C V6 statey has had some extra horses added (eats V8's ) .... here's a link to one of my neighbors sons cars.... all up there's 5 modified S/C cars in a very close proximity....
