my question in short is does anyone know if I can put this engine in my feroza... without changing the ECU or loom???.. it seems this one has a distributer so does this mean the computer controlled timing of other detomasu engines does not apply.. obviously I will have to change the oil pan and pick up extractors and intake etc. (same as an applause swap)

If you want a ripper little engine with plenty of character, take a look at the donk from the Japanese-market Daihatsu Charade DeTomaso.

Coded HD-EG, this 1.6 litre in-line four uses the same block architecture as any other H-series Daihatsu engine. This means the DeTomaso engine will quite easily snuggle into the engine bay of a mid ‘90s G200 Charade. The DeTomaso engine was used between 1993 and 1997.


With a modest 9.5:1 compression ratio and a SOHC, 4-valve-per-cylinder head with distributor, this engine puts out 92kW at 6300 rpm along with 144Nm at 4000 rpm. And it does this on regular unleaded petrol. Sure, there are other 1.6s that make more power (such as the Toyota 100kW 4A-GE) but the DeTomaso engine has plenty of character, it doesn’t need to be pushed to sky-high rpm (as shown in this power and torque graph) and its relatively low compression ratio lends itself to turbocharging. A 5-speed manual gearbox is commonly fitted to the HD-EG engine but a 4-speed automatic can also be found.

Bob Dunn says there are absolutely no problems with these engines – they’re relatively basic and very reliable. As a result, they’d be great in a Charade rally car, kit car or as a replacement engine for your tired G200 Charade.

WOFTAM.

Just do the Applause engine or rebuild whats there, sort our the head and get a cam from tighe. The Detom has slightly more compression, but is also set up to rev higher.

To answer your original question, all the ancillaries will bolt on/off between the two.

The only issue is silly me already has purchased this engine does anyone know if it will run on my ecu

As I said - they are the SAME engine. Yes, it will 'run' on your ECU. All the ancillaries bolt on/off.

IMHO not a really worthwhile modification ( been there done that ......) if its anything but a city vehicle.
Yes its an improvement but you need to rev the crap out of it to get much of the gain - and if your on big rubber then ratios etc can work against you.

Thats why i supercharged... just couldn't match the engines characteristics with what the vehicle actually needed.

Most of the HDEG improvement was actually in the electronics - better ignition, knock sensor etc.... so to make it even worth doing you MUST replace the stock ECU and loom.

The engines are very very similar...... really just a slight upgrade on stock.

. i am having a little trouble finding an ecu and loom to suit (motor did not come with one) i respect what mighty mouse has done with ferozas and the internet seems to have lots of conflicting info i would like ro know if i drop this engine in can i use my ecu and loom untill i am able ro find a replacement

YES YOU CAN! But you will need to change all the ancillairies. Water pump can stay, but alt, thermo housing, dizzy, and a few sensors will need to be swapped over. It will all be very obvious if you pull the old one out and have the two next to each other...

However the difference will then be about zero unless your old engines cactus. Without the HDEG electronics really the change is mostly in name only. Hope it turns out well.

Slight increase in compression (most likely result in undetectable additional power) and different cam profile, which will not work at it's best with the feroza ECU's timing/fuel. Swap feroza cam in for original characteristics.

the swap was pretty straight forward...with a definate increase in power. running the feroza ecu..dizzy,water pump, sump, pick up, thermostat housing and air intake with mrt exhaust... the old motor was pretty tired but the new one will spin the 31's on the black top.very happy thanks guys for your input... I will detail the build here
