Boosting up the 2.8 turbo

Post by rocknferoza »

A mate of mine owns a 98 turbo intercooled pajero. The only mod that has been done is fitting a bigger tail pipe 2 1/2 inch. Still got the origonal exhaust off the turbo. Would it be worth going 3 inch or 2 3/4 inch off the turbo?
How much boost can the pajeros handle and what else can be done 2 get more power?
Has also got an airtec snorkel.

Thanx
James

Snorkel (already done), 2.5" exhaust with dump pipe and boost bleed off arrangement off the wastegate hose.
I think they run about 12 PSI standard so up to 14-15Psi should be fine with the factory intercooler. The 2.8 is a tough motor but like any diesel needs the oil changed every 5,000k's.

Well to give you an idea there was a NJ 2.8 TDI lwb in my street, snorkel, 31"s and 2.5" exhaust (no turbo mods).
When I had my 33"s I could beat him off the line but once it got going I couldn't pull away anymore.
If it had some turbo mods it would have been quicker or at least equal with mine.
So I would say slightly slower than a 5sp 3.0 V6 standard but with some mods it would be quicker but not as quick as a 3.5 V6.
I've driven the new 3.2 GDI 5sp not quite as quick as a 3.5 V6 but definitely quicker than a 3.0 V6. Heaps of mid range torque on those suckers.

Thanx for the imfo guys :D

Just a few things
Would it be worth getting the standard turbo high flowed and possibly get a port job done on the turbo and manifolds or go for a bigger turbo and what would be suitable :?:
Would it be worth going bigger than 2 1/2 inch for the dump pipe 2 get the best results :?:

Thanx
james ;)

I would try the 2.5" dump pipe and exhaust first this will help the turbo spool up a bit quicker and produce a bit more boost.
Doing things one at a time helps you to work out how much power you want.
If it were me I'd do the exhaust first to let it breath as best it can and then look at raising the boost a bit (costs bugger all).
If thats not enough then bigger turbo's/intercoolers/injection timing is next.
But honestly the guys in my club are who own these things never complain about lack of power most are happy as they are and only a couple have actually done the exhaust/boost thing.
