common pipe size for pipe bender?

Post by lozz_ti »

I'm looking at buying a jd squared model 32 bender.

im going to buy a 1" 3/4 (44.5mm) for the hoops on the rollcage for cams spec.

but for just the general bar work what is the common pipe size used? just want to use mild steel thats affordable rather than using the exspensive pipe for everything.

any info would be great.

thanks, lozz

I think most stuff is made from 32NB mild steel.

That sounds about right, the bends don't come out as good but is acceptable especially since the pipe is half the price.

1-3/4" / 44.45mm OD is very common. Some spec's require that as a minimum. 32NB Pipe / 42.2mm OD is also very common on the weekend warrior end of the scale.

Pipe supply is always cheaper than tube, in most cases 1/2 to 1/3 of the price.

So you really can't go wrong with any NB size.. Especially for experimental & one off cheap jobs.

We have some great prices on JD Squared Benders, give Tazz or myself a call at OPW, also check out our website http://www.jd2.com.au" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Mate at $600 odd a die from opw would it really be worth getting a second die? how much bar work do you intend on doing. Also since the dollar has gone to shite OPW is your best bet, I have one currently on its way from the states but I got it while the dollar was good and am expecting 2-3month wait but it saved me $400 at the time :D

Not sure where you were looking, but since the new website launched in June 2011 - http://www.jd2.com.au" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; , the price of the dies I mentioned above are 1-1/2" $450 & 1-3/4" $495. The most expensive common die is 2" at $595. all inc gst.

These prices have not changed since June, The price that has changed is that the M3 & M32 Bender's came down $25ea.

We try our best to ensure that we have competitive rates against guys buying direct from USA & support the product & warranty 100%.

I think you may get a rude shock when these come through customs & are slugged GST / multiple customs entries, & duty charges, ( non of these are ever quoted in a door to door service, as they are "customs & local taxes" )

On a lighter note: I am certain that you will extremely happy with the product.

Yeah my bad $500 odd, I got the m32 1.75" 180 degree. Was under 1k but again the dollar was real good then, so I should avoid most major taxes will keep you posted. But as said now you would be the best option for supply. Out of interest do you have many warranty issues with jd2 products.

Which ever size u choose, make sure you ring your local steel shop to see if they can get it. I can't source any tube in town, only pipe. And I use 42.2mm od and 48.3mm od for b pillars.

thanks for the replys.

i have decided to just get the 1" 3/4 (44.5mm) die. as i can get the pipe cheap enough locally that i cant justify spending the extra money on another size die. if do end up making abit of bar work for friends i can pass on the extra $20 the pipe cost over a 7 meter length.

thanks again, lozz

how does hydraulic tube compare to the stuff you guys are using. its seamless and its tube not pipe, 1.5 inch is 3mm wall thickness from memory. is the carbon content different or something?

Yes it has a lower mPa rating of 250 to roughly 300 where Hrew is minimum 350 & Dom can go up to 650. The other thing that people forget is material like steam pipe has a horrible scale from the manufacturing process plus isn't as consistent in its sizing. It is also not designed to be bent where cage specific materials have these factors in mind when manufactured.
I am not a fan of using anything other than Hrew or Dom as I consider the extra $8-10/m worth the safety.

Does the PIPE Ive used in my cage comply with say ccda standards? Its a 48.3mm seamless , 3.2mm wall main hoop , and 42.3mm seamless used every where else. How can this be tested as seamless pipe with out inspecting the inside?

this is tube designed to be bent, takes 6000+psi. so DOM is the stuff to get, as above how do you proove what you have used is up to standard?

It's cant really be tested can it? Dom tube is a specific size and cant be confused with anything else. But, no where on here http://www.ccda4wd.com.au/images/Rollov ... 060428.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; does it suggest specific tube/pipe to be used. Only diameters which I have used.

Ok it might not be the absolute best material to use, but I would trust my life inside it, if I didnt I would of sorced tube from outer town.

Not trying to start an argument, just wanna get to the bottom of it as we have a few more cages getting built

from my limited understanding. pipe is measured id and tube measured od, pipe has a welded seam and tube is cold drawn seamless? if this is correct the surface finish and od measurement would tell that its pipe not tube?
