Hilux for solid front diff, easy and cheap parts, plenty of builds for ideas.

When my mate built his vitara he found it hard to source parts not.a lot of gearing options at the time. The only real things going for it was the smaller presence on the track and the stability was awesome.

depending on the lux .. the early ones are actually lighter ... ( at least the cab is) .. the laux chassis is definatelt stronger.

Dunno bout the vitara, but I'm in a similar position only tosing up with a sierra and a patrol.
Was thinking of a sierra with patrol diffs and rb30 turbo.
Got a complete patrol and a suzuki to play with, stripped the suzuki back to bare chassis to start transplanting.
When I got it stripped I looked at it and lifted it up and thought, there is no way this chassis is strong enough to support the weight of patrol running gear.
By the time I brace everything, and I mean everything. It would be just as easy to extra cab the patrol.
I'd go the Lux just for the extra strength.
