100 series petrol to diesel

Post by Giggles83 »

Looking to buy a hundred series for a tow car.

Question i have. If i buy a petrol auto. Can you just buy a diffrent bellhousing and bolt a 1hz to the petrol auto? Or a petrol manual?

you would have to change a fair bit more then that to make it work. its more work then its worth for a 1hz motor.
if it was for a 1hdfte then its worth it but its hell of a lot more complicated.

Dont suppose you could ellaborate a bit more on that? As for not worthdoing to a 1hz....i want a good tow vehicle. Diesel is obvios over petrol on economy. Plus my old man has. 1hz out of his 79 series with 180k on it. I can build up for turbo intercooled with a bit off swafftec pump work. My thoughts on problems were. Wether the auto computer is partial to ecu for petrol? If original harness for everything else will work if disconnect engine side (diesel dont need wiring).
And if the boxes arent interchangable through bellhousing. Which are? Is a 79 1hz different to a 100?

1HZ and tow vehicle are mutually exclusive. Unless you're retired and have a lot of patience.

1HZ plus a good turbo and excellent cooling and one of Swaffies pumps could go nicely. Dont expect 1HDT economy though.

As for auto, as far as I know they work of TPS and rpm only, so you should be ok with some mildly clever interception. This is theory - not done it.

I looked into doing this two years ago and the biggest problem was getting a bellhousing. All wreckers wanted to sell me was a complete transmission, they would not seperate. The torque convertors are different to, the diesel has a higher stall and a beefier one way clutch. shift points from memory were different but not by a great deal and the transmission computer could be swapped for a diesel one to suit if you wanted to.

Things I found that would be needed:
flex plate
bellhousing or another transmission
torque convertor
not essential but transmission computer.

Or just get one off pre 1992 80 series with 1HDT. It is a rare A442F thats fully hydraulic so no computer needed (just kickdown. I would recommend a Nomad valve body upgrade from Wholesale Automatics.

Giggles, I doublt a 1HZ would get better fuel economy when towing

My 1HZ with DTS turbo chewed 22 23 litres/hundred with the car trailer on......

My V8 100, chews 21 with the same trailer on......

If you can get a petty auto, I would just drive it as is. A conversion will cost you more in the long run, I bought all the bits then abandoned the idea

You would be better off buying the 1hdfte and 5 speed auto as a package, then put it all in.

killalux and someone else on here was doing up wiring kits to do the swapover in 80 series cruisers, probably wouldn't be much different for a 100.
