4.2 conversion from rb30
4.2 conversion from rb30
iv got a 91 modle gq with the rb30 and wanting to convert it to the 4.2 deisel can anyone help me with finding prices for the swap and wer the best places would b to get the motor and all the gear il need thanks. camshaft
Re: 4.2 conversion from rb30
Start ringing wreckers and watch ebay.
4.2's have slightly different diffs (diferent ratios) and gearbox.
I would be looking for a complete car. Diffs and gearbox are not hard to come by, but TD42's are getting rare but still out there

Re: 4.2 conversion from rb30
i would give patrolapart a ring as you will struggle to find a td42 at a standed wrecker
there is another good place that wrecks patrols in QLD i think (they put alot of ads up on ebay)

Re: 4.2 conversion from rb30
Ive recently done the conversion on a gu from zd30 to td42, IMO if your car is in good nic and nothing out of the norm, you would be better of saving some coin selling it and just buying a td42 GQ .finding all the parts your going to need, short of getting your hands on a written off td42gq will be an absolute pain in the ass.
Blown ls1 GQ winch truck. and GU tow car / daily
Re: 4.2 conversion from rb30
I Agree with Big Lux, if it was a GU that you picked up cheap then definitely worthwhile pursuing but in a car that when finished will still only be worth around the 10K mark max a conversion just isnt worth it. Keep an eye out on forums and ebay etc and you can pick up a good TD42 for 6-10k.
Re: 4.2 conversion from rb30
Some info which I hope will help you.
No need to swap the diffs of driveshafts .
You can just swap the driveshaft flanges on the t case and use all your running gear from the rb.
You can also swap your t case onto the 4.2 box with a small mod to gear case cover oil lip if you need to re use it .
The gearbox crossmember from your rb box is the same as the 4.2 one .
Assuming your going for a manual box and you like to use a light clutch.
You will need to find a clutch vacume booster , and also a new 4.2 slave cylinder, as the 4.2 one is different from the rb30.
Than mess around with the hydraulic clutch lines to make it all work .
Also if you give us a location of where you are so we can point you in right direction for parts you need.
