Gearbox custom mount
Re: Gearbox custom mount
Yeh I'm going to base mine on toughnuts slide plate. But unfortunately with the twins I need a cut out for long front tail shaft. I'm going down the nylon sheet also just need to plan and start building the custom mounts and bell plate.
If anyone has some more pics feel free to post.
Thanks guys

Re: Gearbox custom mount
The only thing that I would have changed about mine would have been to make it a little lighter and longer. The design is very strong but I went overboard with the size and thickness of the tube that I used. Having said that. It sure as hell didn't bend at all and it also braced up other areas like the lower rear trailing arm mounts. I'll probably go a fairly similar style this time around becuse the overall fabrication can mostly be done off the vehicle and there are only small modifications done to the chassis to mount it.vanbox wrote:I actually talked to toughnut a bit before making mine. Based it loosely from his suggestions and pics.
Sliders were welded together with 40mm SHS, the plate then bolted to the ladder frame. When the gearbox/transfer needed an oil change, the plate was dropped for access, thoroughly cleaned and repainted before fitting back up. Again only lost about 10mm clearance overall, but gee the truck became invincible! Saved me many times.
Going to get something under the allison soon, as it is quite vulnerable.
I welded angle to the inside of the chassis rails but you could just as easily use existing mounting points and 'U' bolts over the chassis rails to get the same affect.

I think Cheezy Racing had a gearbox mount to suit twin transfers - has anyone got pictures of one of Cheezy's?

Re: Gearbox custom mount
Hi bud.
not exactly as your after but its still a great mount/ bash plate... i dont see how it can be mounted flush without moving the gearbox and transfer up a bit.
cheers mark.

Re: Gearbox custom mount
Hey Mark,
Nice mount did you make this yourself? Also have you re used the gear box mount humps?
I need to make my mount go above the tail shaft as I will be running twins and will have a lot more tail shaft movement. As for moving the box up I am trying to avoid this.
As for the sheets of nylon I'm not sure yet still looking into it. I know Lukeys 4x4 said he is running it under his lux that is running Toperi so I may ask him.
Will keep everyone posted
Regards
Mitch

Re: Gearbox custom mount
My x-memebr is cut out and gone. I have some custom tranny mounts made from a vulcanized 1980s Chevy 1-ton pickup leaf spring bushing. We torched the e-brake off my t-case for a flat belly and I have a 3/8" belly skid. Oh and it is an MQ Patrol!

Re: Gearbox custom mount
does anyone make a t-case ring like you can get for zooks & hilux's, that would be strongest and easy to adapt.
Re: Gearbox custom mount
I sent a pm to rock toy design fab and he said he can make one he just needs a gasket or tracing of the bolts and he can make it quoted me roughly $60 plus freight for a 6mm ring.I'm gayer than aids! wrote:does anyone make a t-case ring like you can get for zooks & hilux's, that would be strongest and easy to adapt.
So I'm in the process of getting a tracing of it just need to have a better look at were I want it.
Also the ring will need to be braced back to the gear box and mounted the same way so the alloy t-case doesn't get torn in half from torque. So I was thinking of making a full cradle.
I'm still unsure on design until I have a batter look under the truck.
Keep the ideas coming

Re: Gearbox custom mount
I'm moving my motor, box and transfer back 320mm.
I'm thinking of ditching the handbrake and using those bolts as the gearbox mount because it lines up perfectly with the tubular crossmember.
I haven't pulled the handbrake apart yet to see if there are some decently solid threads on the transfer case casting.
I think that should work reasonably well with a shortened old rear suspension arm somewhere else to deal with the torque reaction.

Re: Gearbox custom mount
We have been making t-case rings for patrols for years, just never marketed
10mm ring with new bolts is $90
You can not get a full ring of bolts around a patrol t-case.
There is about 8 of these out there and no one has come back with an issue yet.

Re: Gearbox custom mount
Sweet exactly what ive been looking for. Do you know if the other trucks running these have big tyres/low reduction? Ive made a custom gbox mount using trailing arm bushes but the torque is still snapping bolts on the gbox. Wondering if something fully welded is just going to rip out...bubs wrote:We have been making t-case rings for patrols for years, just never marketed

Re: Gearbox custom mount
Sweet buds I am glad these have been made already, have you got any pics of it installed. Also as Joshy said have these been used on rigs with lots of torque as I'm going to be running twin sticks. Also big rubber as it is going to have big rubber.
Also what is your thoughts on the gear box cross member and should they be brace top each other?
Also have you made any custom patrol cross member?
Regards
Mitch

Re: Gearbox custom mount
so that plate goes on the passengers side just behind the section the transfer lever sticks out of?
or the drivers side, and the tailshaft goes past it?
I'm only running a single transfer, but a lot of torque. A tube welded to that plate to the chassis will be a nice strong lever to stop the transfer torquing the motor over.

Re: Gearbox custom mount
